Country Joe 1,411
Yesterday i did a three hole Bury, the Poly Jill bolted one and killed one, which was dug out. I have never just flung back the soil, I look for a stone which I jam the hole then fill in, leaving the bury intact. As the Jill was in the bury for half an hour, the smell of Ferret must have been strong, was out a walk this morning with the Whippet and walked past this bury, with snow on the ground, and Rabbit footprints at every entrance. The Whippet gave a positive mark so he was at home. Always been surprised how quickly rabbits move back into a bury that a ferret has been through. You would think the ferret smell would put them off, for at least a few Days. Quote Link to post
ferretville 69
Its surprising how quick they will use a ferreted warren . Quote Link to post
The one 8,504
Maybe with all this rain the other burrows where flooded so a ferret smelling burrow was a better option than a flooded one, Ive seen rabbits moving back into burrows a week after they where ferreted and always thought they where rabbits well down the pecking order and now the burrows where empty got a chance to move into them . Theres one small field i have permission on and the banks of the field are riddled with rabbit holes and its surrounded by three farms i dont have permission on and i can ferret good bags of rabbits from there every fortnight Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
We've bolted as many as three rabbits from a warren that a feral was living in. They will move back in sharpish around this time of the year, they seem to pushing each other out of warrens at this time as they are getting mature, you will see the second mass move at the end of Jan as they start pairing up ready for breeding, they will be in an emptied warren in days. Haystack 11
I used to ferret a sheep field, and there was two 3 hole warrens right in the middle. I used to always chuck the ferrets down there so they knew what was going on (it was also great for introducing new ferrets). I'd ferret around that field once a week for at least two months and I remember once being surprised when nothing bolted, because I'd got used to it always giving me at least two rabbits. I reckon it was because it was a really handy escape for rabbits being chased by foxes, or they'd wander out during the night and take refuge in there or something. Quote Link to post
