stroller 341
I want to put a few birds down on the farm where i work, 210 acres of big fields bordered by hedges and a few copses bordering a river. I will be able to get some cover strips in next year. We are also planting small copses all over the place The birds will just be for a bit of rough shooting for myself and training the dogs. The ground at the moment has resident coveys of partridges and the odd wandering pheasent can always be found. We have a few rabbits about and an acre lake full of duck. To be honest i would just like to see more birds about, how many should i put down? and how to hold them ive heard about getting them at 12 weeks and then letting them loose to "Commune" How would you organise this little bit of land? ferretfinder 20
You would need to put a pen in one the covers to keep them there and keep them safe for foxes but as long as there food and cover they will stay Quote Link to post
Lab 10,979
Get them at 7 weeks, don't get them at 12 weeks. Get your pen sorted and plenty feeders and hope they stay. Quote Link to post

Giro 2,648
These big shoots put down some birds, bound to loose a few I have some land for the dogs running daytime.. Walked it other week and the lurcher flushed plenty birds from dyke bottoms, if I had a 12 gauge could of bagged myself a few.. Must of came over from shoot after a drive never seen so many over there.. If someone fed them they would hang about.. I would try and attract birds and other wildlife.. The Roe deer seem to like them peas 1 Quote Link to post

Serious aggro between 2 shoots near here over that a couple of years back. One was up a hill from the other and no matter what the guy on the hill did, nearly all his pheasants wandered down the valley to the other fellas place. FA the former could do about it and last I heard he doesn't even bother with the phezzies anymore and concentrates on Woodcock now instead. Edited December 6, 2012 by killbilly Quote Link to post
