Working Bedlingtons 2005

Recommended Posts

Was out today with some keepers for fox drive, took Elah as had got go ahead from the terrier man who would be there. Short version is 1 shot by standing guns 1 dug to then shot. great day had some good craic afterwards. Elah hunted well thru the cover. When the fox was dug she didnt rag at it but did stand off and bark when teased. As this is 1st time she even seen fox well chuffed will continue to go out and hopefully she'll get the jist.

:icon_eek: Pup born yesterday............ :icon_eek: Yup, that's right one pup born on Easter sunday... she wasn't showing much, thought she might have had a couple of pups, and at least one bitch for me to run on, but 'the best laid plans' never work out when you want them too....

So anyone that has asked me for a pup out of this litter, sorry lads but I aint got any spare... perhaps I'll breeed her later on in the year....

Here's a pic of my bitch 'Lucky' she was bred out of my dog Yogi and a fell bitch, as you can see by the pics she has lost a lot of her coat, this I believe was caused by her moving kennels to mine. Apparently she has always had problems with bald patches on her ears... anyway today I have bathed her and coverd her in Benzyl Benzoate 25% solution. Hopefullly she will start to make some inprovement over the next few weeks, I'm showing you this as a.) You can have a look at her shape before she becomes a furball again, b.) to show you improvement as it happens... If she doesn't improve it will be a trip to the vets...

P.S. She's sound in herself, weight etc her coats just a bit shite at the moment.

Here she is today, 100 times better though not 100% her ears still need improvement, bathed her again today and reapplied the BB, hopefully for the last time..

well certainly not me at 19 inches i consider that far to big, it would be ok for the lurcher boys for crossing but not my cup of tea

I've ad a few shandy's tonight.. so please forgive me if I speak out of turn... the Bedlingtons of today are imo are worse than they were 15-20 years ago... and at that time they were a bit of a joke... to anyone that knew anything about terriers and terrier work..

19" for the lurcher boys.... :icon_eek:

If the Bedlinton is 19" tall it's more than likely to come from SHOW breeding, breeding that's never had to/or have been put to any test.. they might have chased a few rabbits, maybe squirrels or even killed a mouse.... :icon_eek: might have even ragged a fox at some stage in it's life..

"Working Bedlingtons 2005" is the title of this thread, I've yet to see a good bedlington on here that I would consider breeding from, I can put my hands on a few dogs that will and do work to ground, I know of and have been told of some that would be worth using, right type, right conformation and they work..(to ground)...

Lets see how many litters are bred and advertised this year as from good working stock, when all that they have done is chased a few rabbits...

A bit of a dichotomy for me this one SJ.

But in the main, have to agree with the points you raise.

What I'm about to spit out may seem a bit rich coming from someone with a Bedlington over 17" tall , but I do feel that size is not much of a forethought these days when people get together and try to breed so called "working Bedlingtons"

Sadly, this is because the very same breeders are (perhaps unwittingly) contributing to the re classifying of the Working type Bedlington as a "Bushing dog" - (I hate that term).

The coats on some of this new breed of semi psuedo WORKING Bedlingtons are in many cases no better than their show bretheren.

The fact that your bitch had only one pup was not good news for me, as my options for a good sized digging bitch are now severely hampered.

The fact is, that I have only one realistic option open to me now, and if that doesn't come off, I'll just bite the bullet and buy a well bred Lakie.

This Sunday, I may take a trip over to Bedlington for the WMWTC show, more to catch up with a few people than anything else.

Going by last year, there will be plenty of "working type" Bedlingtons in attendance, But I guarantee that my young dog will be the only one there who has the visible marks evident of having been up close and personal with Charlie.

It's all a bit depressing really.
