First Firearms Certificate help!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

i am in the process of applying for my firearms/shotgun certificates and just have a few questions.

On the form i need to put land on which the rifles will be used, i do not have my own land but are allowed on farmers land around me, but mainly the firearms will be used for the pest control buisness that me and my family run.

Any help on what i can put down on my form?

I am looking to apply for a 22lr for vermin control, 17hmr for vermin and sub 100yard fox and a 243 for fox/deer (i am in my second year of sixth form college and will be taking a year out to do work then do go off to a college to do a gamekeeping related course, hense the deer aspect on the 243),

do you think this would be allowed as it will be my first certificate?, or am i better of going for a 223 and putting in the variation after i have done my course?

Many thanks

Dan.

Odds are you will need some written land permission for your FAC. If your family run a Pest Control Business you will need to show the police it is a business and they may be more accommodating.

You can apply for and should be granted ANY Firearm you can justify.

I never get hold of terms like "17hmr for vermin and sub 100yard fox" , why do people do this, you don't apply for "a .243 for fox and sub 1000 yard deer"?

as it is a first time appilcation i would be very careful of how many rifles you apply for........22lr & .243 will cover all your requirements and keep your requirements to a minimum ........get your certificate first then put in for your various variations...........just a suggestion

if you can shoot on farms around by you. there isnt nothing in asking the farmer for a letter of permission to use the rifles your applying for over his land.

you have half the battel in getting a fac sorted then. as for the rifles you want. put down on what you think you need. if these permission dont have deer then you may not be able to get a 243 granted.

unless they grant it you just for fox.

I have just been through the whole FAC thing..

my FAO was not happy with me asking for a HMR for sole use on Fox, he said dont put Fox down as a reason for the HMR just put 'Long Range Vermin Control where a 22LR would not be suitable'

His reasoning was, although you can shoot vermin with 17hmr and a fox is classed as vermin its not a suitable calibre for Foxs, he said the minimum that he (cambridgeshire) would allow is 22WMR for the sole use on fox.

I dont know if this is just a local thing or what, anyway after putting the long range vermin line ive got my HMR approved.

As its my first licence and although I have years of experience shooting military weapons and land permissions up to .243 they would not grant me one, they suggested i wait a year and then put a variation in.. but to be fair the rimfires will keep me busy until then

its also worth writing a cover letter and sending it in with the application explaining everything, they dont give you much room on the forms

Same county and all my application said from memory was was 22LR vermin control 17HMR vermin control 223 fox. (All 3 granted)

No need for 'long range' to be on application seems a strange statement!

Agree with comment that fox is considered vermin tho so no real reason you cant take with either the 22 or 17HMR :whistling:

No it is not classed as 'vermin' in the same sense rabbits and rats etc are, I think Fox is in its own class

Did I miss something, did you say fox IS Vermin or IS NOT Vermin? :hmm::thumbs:
