FlyMyGirl 147
Hi all Bit of advice needed. I feed my dogs raw meat and bones regularly sometimes with a bit of dry complete to bulk it out. First question. Can you give dogs to much bone or is bone (with meat on) ok to give everyday, although I tend to have a few days with just the frozen packets of say chicken and tripe, they do like their meat on bones. Also when feeding raw rabbit can you leave skin on or is it preferable to skin the rabbit as well? Never fed the dogs raw rabbit but I do like to vary their diet as much as possible like chicken, tripe, lamb, pork so any new meats to add to appetize them is always a bonus How much should the dogs be fed on raw meat is there a weight of meat to weight of dog? Mine are by no means skinny but they also have a lot of w
FlyMyGirl 147
Don't know what happened there I shall take of where my phone decided to post They also have a lot of work so want to make sure I'm going enough but not to much. Lastly I promise, what sort of veg or supplements should I be adding to make the diets the best they can be, I do every now and then give the dogs a raw carrot to chew on and also sometimes add carrots, broccoli so on to there feeds but I am unsure of what veg or extras are ok and what ain't ok. Any advice much appreciated Thanks in advance FMG

Gaz_1989 9,539
I wouldn't bother with the dry if feeding a good varied diet. I go off eye, if she looks like she's holding a bit of weight then cut down on food etc. Supplements - a spoon of keepers mix a few times a week and a spoon of cod liver oil a few times a week. Veg - as and when. Yesterday she had chicken mince and after nicked an apple out of the fridge, tonight she's had a turkey neck and then left overs from my Chinese (no sauces obviously, just boiled rice, boiled chicken, duck) and in there she had carrot, mushroom and the cucumber what come with the duck. Some nights I give a bag of steamed veg, the microwave bags from supermarkets. All the best.
Gaz_1989 9,539
And yes you can give too much bone, dry powder like stools are the result. If stools are firm but not crumbly then you are probably feeding ok.
FlyMyGirl 147
Thanks for that sometimes there stools are white in colour I tend to not give them bones for a couple of days and it goes to normal straight away. I need to find a local supplier of good mince really as I'm currently just using supermarket and butchers and boy am I feeling it when there's 5 hungry mouths to feed lol. Gaz_1989 9,539
If its white then you've fed too much bone. I feed bone daily but keep it to about 25% now.
FlyMyGirl 147
Yeah I've started just bones every couple of days or so and they are fine now. I've always fed the dogs on complete and only the tiny bits of meat every now and then and since I've switched to more meat and less complete I honestly can't believe the difference in coat, condition and general well being of the dogs. I certainly won't be going back now :-)

I would rather give handful of quality cibble with meat opposed to veg and left over chinky  Cibble has got to beat rice aswell.. My dogs would not entertain . They got some left over carrots in with the scran and they ate around them.. Just my opinion.. Mabie not right but mine geen no veg ever.. Plenty of meat and decent dry food as a mixer this will ensure supplements, oils and vitims are within daily intake.. I would give scraps in with food. as I dont waste, but we aint skinny in our house
FlyMyGirl 147
Haha mine get scraps (when there's any left!!!) lol My dogs love veg, in fact there's only one of them that's even remotely a fussy eater.

planete 120
I have this funny idea in my head that a dog living wild would be more likely to find and eat fruit than vegetables. After all raspberries, strawberries and blackberries grow wild and are pretty palatable to dogs (mine love them, even bananas!), but vegetables as we know them would not exist in the wild? My ideal dog diet would be meat, bone and some fruit. Or am I barking?
