ledders666 6
Went out yesterday for a first go on my new permission after previously walking on it i spotted a warren in a bank amongst a load of hazel coppices. So i went down around 1, set up the nets there was only six holes but probably spread over a 5mx5m section of the bank, so well spread out for a few holes. I put my new Hob (terry) down first, I was given him as a kit earlier in the year nasty little thing always biting, so i tamed it and its fine to handle now, also turned out to be the biggest hob Ive seen. The first hole i put him in was a small bolt hole which he did not like and baked out, so i tried a larger hole a he went in fine which i was glad of. Didnt hear anything for 5 minutes then, thump thump so i knew he was on to some.but nothing came out so i got the locator found his mark at 8 foot! so i left it and chose patients rather than the spade. After a little while a rabbit came to the edge of a hole i could just see it ears sat there from up the bank, then it bolted straight into the net. Went down and dealt with it, as i was resetting the net another came up the bank out of the bolt hole i first tried putting terry down. so went and dealt with it reset the net, sat back down for a second, and another out of the same whole this time with the ferret attached. After this the ferret lost interest in going back down so i put down my little experienced Jill to mack sure it was clear, gone for a few minutes then another bolted. After that i packed up as four was enough for me that day. but i was glad to see that my new hob is a keen one bolting three rabbits in its first half hour out. and that i have some permission left that the warrens weren't flooded on. ledders666 6
yes first time ive used a hob, normally just a couple of jills, it will be usefull to have now i know its keen and will bite and grab them. Ive had it several times when my little jills have obviously met a rabbit in a stop end and cant get at it, so hopefully my big hob will go down and have more of a chance shifting it.
