"Bishop Auckland Neighbourhood Police Team:

We are investigating after three lurcher dogs were stolen from an allotment next to Bishop Auckland Rugby Club.

The animals, two adults and a puppy, all male, were taken between 4pm on Monday, November 26 and 11am the following day.

PC Sarah Rodgers said a number of other reports about dogs being stolen from allotments and gardens in Bishop Auckland have been received, and that a dark-coloured Subaru Forester estate car had been spotted close to where some of the thefts had occurred.

She added: "I would urge dog owners to be vigilant regarding their animals' safety. As in this case, allotments are often away from residential areas with no one on hand to keep an eye on them. Where possible robust security measures should be put in place."

Anyone with information regarding the theft, the whereabouts of the stolen animals, or similar incidents are asked to contact Durham police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting DHM-27112012-0331, for the attention of PC Rodgers."
