esoxluscious 44
as a new falconer, next year will see me get my first bird, obviously leaning very heavily towards harris hawk but 60% of my flights will be on corvids, sneaking up in the car, parking up (safely) and then slipping 30% rabbits, ferreting and general mooching the remaining 10% pheasant and hare Any ideas/ male or female? Ginger shooter 58
Female all the way!! Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
If you want to take hares mate, it has to be female,as a male does not have the weight and power to hold a hare, consider a redtail as well mate, you will learn more about weight control with a red than you ever will with a harris,as good as they can be. esoxluscious 44
thats the thing the hares are sparse on my permission, so they would be very rarely if ever flown, from what ive read about the redtails there hard to get switched on and wouldnt be quick enough for corvids? i have never seen one flown so am only going on what ive read online? male harris for feather/ female for fur? ATB PERE/SAKER all day long for covids as you will struggle mugging many with a harris unless your throwing it out the car window ,look at your main quarry and get a bird to suit not other way round 1 Quote Link to post

ayrshiretaxidermy 29
Im with Grovsey, any HH will fail at corvids, unless your already on top of them when you slip. Not sporting, and a waste of time. If corvids are your main quarry, a falcon, female Per/Saker or Tribred ( Per x Gyr./Saker) will do the job without the need for a 10 foot slip and also gives a great flight. 1 Quote Link to post
esoxluscious 44
but as a beginner, how are the falcons to train? recommend any good books on falcons? Quote Link to post
grovsey 74
Get a mentor Like with any bird ,know bird managment will help u train any bird to many think they have to get a Harris first The answer to that is no not at all you get they right bird for the quarry u got to fly at ,that way u have great sport and enjoy yourself more than.struggling Spend a season learning with a falconer 2 Quote Link to post
