Some advice on a variation please

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I've not had my FAC long and my .22lr condition only states vermin!

Got about 12 acres of land but only about 5 of that is wooded area. Surroundings are pretty clear except for a horse field shelter that i keep away from out of courtesy to the girl that has her horses there.

I get quite a lot of foxes and a friend sometimes comes over and i lamp up for him. Trouble is his time is getting more scarce due to work commitments and we're losing chicken during the day and some damage at night trying to get in.

I'm just waiting the result of my DSC1 and am intending on going on some stalks both south and back home up north.

Is it worth me applying for a variation at all due to length of time with the LR?

Ideally i'd like to just have 2 rifles, the 22 for rabbits and something like a 270 or 308 for fox and all deer species in the UK.

What do you folks think?

My FLO was pretty helpful last time.

Cheers,

Richard

just apply for variation i had .22 and .223 with mentor condition only had fac for 10 months but been hunting with mentor for bout 15 years so he decided to write a letter explaining how safe he felt i was with a firearm i sent that in with a variation for fac shot gun and another .22 rf 3 weeks later had certificate back mentor condition taken off new slots for .22 and fac shotgun plus they also gave me open certificate for both .22 .

the moral of the story is you dont ask you dont get the answers

Is the land you shoot on passed for centrefire? If not you will need land that is passed for centre fire to be ale to apply for that calibre.

Also if there isn't any deer on the land I doubt they will grant you a condition for deer.

It's all about the NEED when discussing centrefires. The police view is if you haven't got land to shoot it on why do you need it, if you have land to shoot it but there are no deer on the land why give you the condition for deer, it's that simple.

You could get round point two by stating you want to use the centrefire for deer stalking by payment or invite therefore creating the "need" for that condition.

It is unlikely,(but not impossible) that your 12 acres is passed for a .270/308 if it is not, then even if you have land that is,unless you are granted an open condition,(again highly unlikely on your first cf application) you will not be able to use your cf on that ground,my advise would be to bait the foxes in close and deliver 42 gms of no 3s from a 12 bore, that should stop em chicken theiving.

good advice, thanks all

from my recent conversation with my local firearms manager who makes the decision said to me, ' potentially we can grant it' you have been invited onto land with deer on it ALLREADY. once booked or the land owner with the deer on it grants permission in writing this might help you.

but best to get the paperwork signed by the land owner first then ask the police for what you want after you have this.

they seem to want the land passed for the desired rifle AND permission from the land owner in writing AND the target species to be on the land or at least the land owner to confirm this when police ask.

any other positive information - relevant experince - qualifications - etc will only help.

say anything negative and they use it against you.

and of course its like talking to a stuborn old hedmasters these firearms police officers.
