how much land does a small syndicate need

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been a member on a very small shoot or heard of a syndicate being run on a small farm?

Would 50 acres be too small for say a 3 / 4 gun syndicate releasing enough birds for a few days rough shooting? The farm in question has no real woodland, just 1 small pond, a couple of streams and some thick hedgerows.

It sounds like you would get a little walk up,but depends on what's around you too, what head of game/vermin occupy the spot, and what you could feed up into the area, are they any flash floods that stay into spring to feed, Rhodey is right really carefull managment,

good luck

Yes no problem with that PG......just my kind of sport. Feed the pond, get some ducks coming in and round off the day with a duckflight

Would releasing say 20 - 30 ducks and feeding the pond and streams bring in a few wild ones?

If it was me I wouldn't release any duck at all. Is the pond visited by wild duck ? How big is it ? Duck will soon find food put in, just a question of keeping an eye on it, wait to the food starts disappearing, there will be tell tale signs ie feathers , prints. Just keep feeding ever day if possible and they will soon turn up on numbers.

I run a small shoot on 30 acres. The land is fringe moorland with scrub, pasture and rough grazing.

Good feeding regimes and habitat managment to hold birds is vital. As you will only be putting small numbers of birds down predator control is more vital than ever. Good neighbours are useful. And if there are shoots nearby birds wandering can be an issue, Just depends in which direction ;)

Good luck, Yorkie

Do you mind me asking for a few more details? How many birds down, how many guns and what size of bag do you get?

The first year we put down 40 ex lay hens. They fecked off! Second year 75 with a return of 41%. We are in our 3rd year and put down 100 birds. The rain hammered them up here, but good shelter seems to have held them well. We have 2 flight ponds and feed for wild duck and have a reasonable head of wild pheasants too.

We shoot 3 to 5 guns. Walking the boundaries first, then 2 drives from the inside to out if that makes sense. Followed off sometimes with a duck flight. The bag doesn't really matter, its a good craic with a few friends.

Will GArfit wrote a book about his small shoot at Hauxton Pit. Based on 50 acres, and won the Purdey award for it.

Enjoy

3 of us put down 50 poults on this our first year. We have shot 1 so far and can only see another few still around. To be honest the other 2 guns live a fair way from the shoot and between us we have not put in nearly enough work on management and vermin. I think the other 2 will give it up as a bad job and pack it in this year. Trying to get my mind into if I should carry on or not. The rent is £200 a season.
