Young Dog Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi there, new to the forum hope you're all well. I'm after some advice from you guys regarding my 15 month old lurcher. I used to have a little grey and white collie whippet greyhound, had her from 8 weeks old, trained her up to fetch, jump and general all round hunt, mainly ferret and lamping, she turned out to be a cracking little dog, she became my best buddy, we'd be out every week mainly lamping until october 2 years ago when i slipped her on a rabbit and she stumbled and fell breaking her kneck and killed her instantly. she was only 4 years old. to say i was gutted was an understatement.

My mate had the sister to this dog and she was on a par with mine for being a good all round lurcher, he bred a litter from her and gave me a pup to bring on as my next worker, I've spent time training this bitch up and to be fair even though I'm by no means any kind or expert on dog training i did a reasonable job with my last one, I've spent time letting her be a puppy and teaching her to fetch etc to which she is pretty reliable fetching a dummy back 99% to hand, she will sit and stay etc,. i have always had a niggling little doubt about this dog and how she is going to turn out as she has always seemed quite immature in comparison to other pups i have seen and been in contact with, so rather than rush her i have just left her be a while and see how she develops, i have been around her from the moment she was born, she seems to be quite a nervous dog for reasons i have no idea as she has been treated well and lives in doors with my older whippet and my little boy and nothing has ever happened to her to make her frightened, she is now 15 months old, she hasn't been run on anything until about a month ago, i took her out a few weeks ago and let her have a go on a rabbit and as it slipped through the fence i heard her growling, so i put her back on the lead and took her home, i went out the other night with her after probably leaving it a month or so and slipped her on a rabbit i had cornered in a field, she is keen to get at them and doesnt go mad or anything like that but again as this one went through the fence i could hear her bark, she was quiet as she was chasing it and only barked as it got through the fence, again i made no fuss just put her back on her lead and took her home, but to be honest i was absolutely gutted that she was barking.Tthe bitch i lost and her sister both never uttered a noise when out working. i was hoping maybe some of the more experienced guys on here might have some ideas on this, is she likely to grow out of it.....? realistically i can't help but think it is only going to get worse.. she hasn't been the easiest dog to train. Any advice would be greatfully appreciated, best regards Hairymuttly

Not had any yet, so it probably is down to frustration and in experience she's only had a couple of runs to be honest, but I didn't want to make her worse by just carrying regardless without seeing what some body more experienced might say. Just thought I would ask the question. Thanks for the replies guys.

years ago my dad would get a ferreted rabbit in a bag and take it in the middle of a big field and let it go for the dog.Of course, i am not suggesting you do this i am merely stating this for historical purposes as this would be highly illegal now :whistling:
