Right incase anyone else thinks im retarded enough to think all rough coated lurchers are the same i think i should explain that i havent made a decision yet on the exact type im after. Thats the whole reason i started the topic. It'll primarily be running rabbits day and night on all diferrent types of ground, some really flinty with lots of cover. Most types of dog that bring a rough coat to a lurcher are generally hardy and tough with decent feet and extra coat around cover can surely never be a bad thing?

Anyway anything that should make over 20tts will be considered, would prefer a type with early pace but generally a good all round lurcher type.

Hope this clears things up for anyone whos confused

i wasnt confused, you clearly said "got to be rough coated" and i simply asked why.........a good coat is always on a good dog............

It has got to be rough coated cos thats what im after. i wouldnt of got defensive if it wasnt for the comment you made before that. You said ''ffs''. i asked what the problem was and so did someone else and your response was ''why does it have to be rough coated?'' I actually didnt understand why you wrote ffs just cos i wanted a decent coat on my dog thats all?

Can't understand why beardie lurchers aren't more common, although I do like a mix of beardie and border. In my experience they hunt more for a scent than the pure border x greyhounds. They have very good skin, excellent feet, clever. Mine had so few injuries, was the best hunting dog I've owned and very easy to live with. Can't think of a better mooching dog. Oh, and he had an ace coat better than most beddie coats by far.

Thats why i thought maybe they werent as good as a border x cos you dont see half as many. interesting though, maybe a beardie x could suit me well

you going to be showing it :whistling:

If its got a jacket and it looks the part, why deprive the shows and captive audience, ive a drawer full of trophys and rosettes for my rough haired mongrels.Does it make them work harder and better, possibly not,but it may make owning them that touch sweeter, not really but better to look at a looker than an ugly smooth coated mongrel.

Whys that?,some prefer a jacket, some smooth,so what,it won,t affect the working potential of the mutt,it will affect the image that some may conceive better portrays a lurcher.I prefer a coat and the type of jukel that best carries the so called image, not for appearance sake but for whats in the breeding and what it offers in the field.Ill stay a tool.

why would a rough coat give a lurcher a better image? whenever i get a lurcher i make sure its from good working stock that are proven in the field and not on if it has a nice fluffy coat

I am doing everything i can to make sure its from good working stock. The coat isnt my priority, its ability in the field is the most important thing but smooth or coated lurchers can make good dogs so why not choose the one that i prefer the look of. If it turns out there arent any coated pups from proven parents available to me when the time comes, I'll either wait unitl there are, or get a smooth bitch that is from proven stock

I wrote it slowly so as not to become confusing for some,a jacket means nothing, the breeding that a jacket,in certain lurchers, depicts their breeding and thus their potential in the field, that may better suit certain quarry and owners, the image suits a certain type of lurcher, that picks up the main ribbons at shows, does,nt make them a better worker, just a better looker,to some, horses for courses, rough, smooth or broken coated it matters little, except to the viewer or owner.
