Brimmer 220
Hi chaps, had another day out again today. After last Sunday I wasn't sure whether I wanted to go out TBH, it had been getting more like work than sport, taking up the slack in the team, and have quite a lot on at present, working on the new house, seeing off the final stages of a work contract finding myself having to burn the candles at both ends daily. A phone call last night off the old feller saw me make a spur of the moment decision, thats get back out there even if you dont feel like it. ( More for the team than myself.) So I told him see you at 7 as usual. Glad I did. More or less the same team as usual, Me the old chap, the two runners Jed and Robbie, but a slight change to plan on the ferrets, This time Billy Bob The Fang and Billy Bobs Brother, two five year old albino hob twin brothers (Spikes younger brothers for anyone that has been on here a long time), replaced the two jills this time. Of late the jills have worked without fault, but as the weeks have gone on recently, we have found for whatever reason, the rabbits just dont want to bolt, and only the graft from the jills see's them moving or a dig instead. Ive had a few thoughts over the last week that a bit more muscle may help, and today proved it in the shape of these small compact experienced hobs. Worked alone, they take no nonsense, and we started seeing rabbits bolting within a minute of engagement, rather than 5 minutes of engagement. The rabbits still did not want to bolt, but they had no choice. Many times today, I found myself forcing my hand down a tube to grab the rabbit, trying its best to get away at the entrance, whilst the little hobs had it pinned by a back leg, or its butt. (Must have been retrieving them eh!). On one occasion riding it out into the net, and another hanging off the rabbit, as a dog dragged it out, and every other occasion, hanging off the rabbit as I dragged it out. These little fellers at the end of there career will be hard to replace for the future, and have given 5 years of strong service to myself, hope I can squeeze another year out of them! Anyhow, hillside sets again, plenty of nets on the slopes, quite a few digs as well, but a lot less than I have been getting of late with the jills. After an hour or two, the old feller could not help but wander with the dogs as I did the boring bit with the nets and ferreting, and I kept hearing squealing in the distance, as he kept upping the tally with dogs, must admit it was awesome to watch them put up and nail them on ground most would not even consider running a dog on. even saw Jed flip as he missed a rabbit just make it to ground right in front of me on a warren, dislodging a big boulder with his back. The dog is sooner or later going to come unstuck, he got up like the bloody terminator and carried on as normal. I just shook my head as i normally do. desperate bloody dog. Found this in a short pophole. Looks like it was all eaten in one sitting, and looks like one of our old fiends was about, stoats eat, but this carcass, probs a week old had all the hall marks of a feral in attendance, hope I meet him soon! Anyhow This photo's for Tomo, hope you are no longer ashamed of me, I got this lot off the hill in one walk! Totalling 40 in one hit, I was 23 yrs old the last time I carried that amount, a lot younger, and the rabbits were not as big as these rascals! (Must admit though, I had to do a second journey up the hill to pick up the ferrets, nets, spade as the old feller could only get himself down, bless him!). End of day with the bag. A great day out, I'm dialled back in. 9 Quote Link to post
