And just like that, they make 40 billion euros of your money vanish!!!........just wrote off........don't forget to pay your next parking fine or tax bill on time will you !!!

They're just doing the equivilant of putting Greece on benefit by keeping these payments up, I can't see an end to it.. It's exactly what's happened in this country but on a massive scale... They should invest the money trying to get Greece working and competitive so it can stand on its own a bit more if they're going to put it in there, not just use it to prop up an ecconomy which is clearly sinking under the one size fits all policy of the Euro..

Yep and the best or even only way for them to do that is to have their own currency and devalue from the euro.

at least there exports would become competeive within europe and give them a way to rebuild their economy, it would be tough but whats being done at the minute is just prelonging the inevitable for the sake of false stability in the european union.

Totally agree fellas. If they were able to devalue their currency, their exports would get cheaper and outside investment would flood into the country to take advantage of the cheap labour and manufacturing costs.. The only way the euro will ever work well across all the different countries is if the mechanisms to make money are evenly spread out across the whole Eurozone.. That ain't never going to happen and I can't see the German people wanting to underwrite the rest of the Eurozone with money made in Germany for ever and ever..

their exports

What exports?

Serious question. Olives and............. ? f**k all.

2011 estimates (CIA World Fact Book - I know...)

Greece exports $28.16bn

Ireland exports $118.1bn

Denmark $111.8bn

Finland $78.83bn

So if Ireland, with $118.1bn worth of exports doesn't think it worthwhile having the Punt back to devalue, what sense does it make for Greece with $28.16bn and add to that their non existent tax collection system, as well as corruption.

In all fairness mate, Ireland wasn't worth a carrot until it took the 30 bits of EU silver.......there's no way your country is getting off that bandwagon no matter what pain or lack of democracy you have to suffer.

Honestly don't mean to be insulting by writing that, it's just how I see it.

That's why we joined it Wilfred. Do remember though, before our current financial difficulties we were about to become net contributors to the EU budget.

But the point of my post was to say it's a nonsense to say Greece would export better with their own currency. They wouldn't, quite simply because they export sweet fúck all.

Shipping on a truely global scale, Olives (lol) Wine etc. Problem is they have the worst tax payment rate because they are all dodgy feckers hiding their money from the goverment coupled with an crap collection system all of which was hidden from the initial investigation into Greece's finaces prior to acceptance into the Euro hence why they are now fooked.

The major issue with the Euro is the total polarised ideas on Central government, Budgets/spending and Economy between North and Southern European states add to this the totally differing industries, lifestyle and the inability to control their currency value on a local level and you've got the shitstorm we're in now.

The arguement is a devalued currency would mean cheeper costs. Manufacturers would be attracted to Greece.

With countries like Greece I don't think it's what they export that makes the difference it what they import, namely foreign money in tourists, holiday homes, retirement homes........if most people could buy a very cheap home in a country like Greece they would and spend all their money there.

There's much cheaper countries to live in outside the EU where your money will go a long way.......a lot further than it will in Euros anyway.

Plus, as has been said above, if you could make something in Greece as cheaply as you could in china and not have the extra shipping costs then companies would do it ( if the labour laws were flexible enough)

And devaluing helps them how? It wouldn't.

Why would it? They speak a funny language and are on the wrong end of Europe as well as being work shy. You won't get cheaper costs because their debt will be in Euro's still and their currency will be worth something South of nothing.

And the price of imports would soar beyond the reach of most of the population, plus as above their debts would be held in Euros, with the value of their own currency racing the wrong way from that debt level.

You picked the wrong person to quote there John, I mentioned sweat FA about exports in my post..

You seriously think a country like Greece or Ireland wouldn't benefit from devaluing their own currency against the currencies of their trading partners mate? It's how countries used to be able to get themselves out of the shit when times were tough..

Forget the debt mate, we all know that means nothing......they will just say " we can't pay" and that will be the end of it, all written off.

Same as they did today, same as they have done with Africa a few times........the debt means nothing because its just taxpayers money and there's always plenty more of that.

Yes, I seriously do think we wouldn't benefit. And I know because we've had that discussion here many times nationally. How countries "used to" do things is irrelevant because there are different factors at play being within the single currency. Our new currency would be singled out by international vultures, our cost of living would soar, the price of imports would rise dramatically, we wouldn't be able to pay for public services and most other associated things Govt funded.
