first goose

Recommended Posts

got my first goose yesterday im landed, there aint many around my parts just a couple hundred grey and canada. Well i got on the marsh by 5am got myself tucked in with my cocker flask of tea and all the sights n sounds of the marsh, well the gulls comorants egrets etc passed by the shell duck were in range but they knew that :),a wild perigrine flew not 15ft over my head and i was in awe as i watched seeing all its markings clearly the kingfisher flew by and i called the widgeon to no avail after seeing them land on the mud some distance down,it was 7:30am and i was ready to call it a morning as i watched two swan fly by and with that from behind came the swooshing of goose wing beat a small skien of 15 or so right over my head.....Honestly i panick,ed raised the barrels and let loose, a canada dropped twas but winged i sent my lad out and reloaded as the remaining geese turned, the downed goose made good to the other side of the water a good 65yds+ as my boy got into the fast stuff and the breakers due to the wind he began to turn back, i gave the command "GET BACK" and he did so, he had marked his bird he caught up to the downed bird tother side it made water again and dived several times before he secured it, and then came the epic retrieve a bird as big as he a strong current and wind to boot. The current took him down stream but he pumped and pumped and to all my encouraging made it to the bank, i must say i was worried as it was a rough un but i knew the tide was right and although a swim was needed there was sand/mud out there if he got into problems but he didnt and toghether we bagged our first goose.as i type its in the fridge prepped for the oven

Good pics fella. I don't do any wild fowling but we get plenty of geese up here crop raiding along the sides of our resovoirs. We shoot the odd few for pest control but in no way the extremes you have and certainly not for the table. Goose or duck isn't for me.

Well done Jason, always tastes better when it's your own bird.
