Coyotehunter 689
Its getting close to the end of our season here in Canada, although i hope we might keep going a little bit longer, Wednesday we met at one of our best fixtures where we've been finding coyotes all season but they have been running in bad directions, yesterday that didnt happen. We met at 11 and headed out across a ploughed field to the first cover, my wife ( who whips-in to me) slips on ahead to get to the other side of the cover, then she says over the radio that theres a coyote in the middle of the field, i look to the west and sure enough theres a yote sitting in the middle of the field having a dump !!! he didnt manage to finish what he was doing but managed to get a couple of fields before he got snuffled, coyote number 1 Meanwhile the other whipper-in tells me theres another coyote gone east and then crossed the south road and continued going south, so i finish making a fuss of the hounds and gallop up to where she'd last seen it , which was about half a mile away, so all in all the coyote had about 15/20mins on the hounds, they took it away quite slowly and gathered momentum till they hit the cover which slowed them down( understandable with all the leaves on the ground) to walking pace but within three or four minutes were screaming again, the lady master viewed him away from the far western side of the covert, i came along just as the hounds were streaming out of the cover with lovely cry across a winter wheat field heading for another small covert to the west, now ... this is where it gets interesting, so i hear over the radio the coyote had come out on the south side of the covert and was running across the ploughed field to the south, so i start heading to the south side of the covert, and sure enough, out to the south i see a red coyote hightailing down the field, then i see the hounds heading staight west absolutely flying, nobody saw it but the hunted coyote had gone straight west and the one going south was a fresh one !! so hounds did a brilliant job of hunting this coyote for about 5 miles crossing two fairly major roads, my horse was starting to feel it a bit at this point as a trudged through another ploughed field, until i hear on the radio that two hounds that had gotten away from the main body of the pack have the coyote stopped and are baying it up by a line of Cedar trees, so i kick on much to the horses disgust, i get there with reinforcements but what turned out to be two 1st season bitches hadnt been able to hold the coyote, the hounds screamed past me and were back on the coyote in quick pace and were scorching his arse up a page wire fence, typical, the hounds were one side of the fence and the coyote was the other!!! the hounds crawed under the fence and were all over the coyote and yet he still managed to dodge the pack and had started heading back east again, this gave the coyote vital seconds not to be killed, it took the pack a a minute or so to work out that he had doubled back but once they had he was in trouble , they flew on him for about half a mile bowling him over in the open before he crossed a big major road to the north , hounds had hunted about 7 or 8 miles and about a 5 or 6 mile point . 1 Quote Link to post
