Kennels and lurchers

Recommended Posts

I went to pic up my bitch today after two weeks in a new kennel, which had several good recommendations.

Basically I went in today to pick her up and straight away I noticed she was underweight and looked shook up.

I took her straight to the vets and got her weighed knowing she weighed 50lb / 23kg when I took her there.

She weighed in at 18.5kg / 41lbs.

She has lost ALOT of muscle. Before she went she was spot on with her fitness, was out lamping atleast 3 times a week. Now she just looks frail.

So what I'm asking is whats the best food to give her to regain her weight. I feed her on a RAW diet and I supplied the kennels with that for the duration of her stay.

Got her home and she ate her normal RAW chicken wings, lamb ribs and cows heart.

Can you lads think of any other types of food I could give her to help things along?

Exercise wise I'm thinking just road walking for a start then at the end of the walk let her free run in my local park or a few minutes and gradually build her up.

I dont have any pics of before she went in and I'm not going to start taking any now as shes fast asleep at my feet, she looks knackered. You lads think she was stressed in the kennels?

Cheers

My grandad had the same with a greyhound he kenelled whilst on holds years back, took it in in top condition 2 weeks later, it was skin and bone, some dogs dont kennnel well at all away from their own patch. I think finding a mate/ family who is dog savvy and willing to take them in whilst your away or house sitting is always the best option and you can return the favour for them, but obviously not always possible. Best of luck getting your dog back itno shape, sure they will be chuffed to be home.

Why not feed it as you did before the kennel incidence?,if it worked for you then, why look to change it?.Even if the dog became picky and stressed in the kennel, you paid for a duty of care with them, which they did,nt meet, ask for a refund.

Simo, thats what I'm doing bud just feeing her smaller meals but more a day, essentially like a puppy again.

Cheers for that northern... lol

Matt, the kennels she normally goes into was closed as the owners went on holiday and she was fine there lost a little weight maybe 1kg and she whenever I took her there she couldnt wait to go to her kennel, but this new kennels was completely different, when I went to pick her up she was very happy to see me as usual and walked nicely on the lead by my side walked straight past a family member upto the kennel office exit door and she literally pulled to get straight into the car.

She certainly wont be going there again, but you live and learn.

I had the exact same thing with mine at the end of the summer when I put them in the kennel for a couple of weeks, their fitness was spot on before and properly muscled up but it just dropped off while they were in. Took me the best part of a month to get his back end muscled up again.

I was livid at the time but the kennel with 40 odd dogs being paid £8 per day cannot be expected to put the same amount of exercise into them and if they are not eating then it will drop the weight off. I dont think I will leave them in the kennels again am hoping i will be able to place them with a mate, who can hopefully get them some exercise while i am away. I wouldnt even have been bothered if they had come back fat but the muscle loss was hard to stomach

Thats exactly how I felt, I was thinking before I picked her up I would need to take a maybe a week or two to get her fitness back up to standard but when I saw the muscle wastage I was very disheartened, felt sick tbh....

Never again, I'll find a mate or family friend to look after her next time. Gutted for her and annoyed because I've been itching to go lamping.

Cheers lads for the advise
