had this dog from 7 weeks old,really well bred but god is it hard work.

hes 10 and half month old now.saluki x greyhound the sire is benji MJ dog.

hes had all the best food,Ive spent loads of time with him.

I had a run 2 nights ago he lost it in some long cover,fair dows thats life,then it took another ten mins getting back on the lead, he hunted the full field up,In the end i sat in the middle of the field like pr--k smoking a fag till he come to me.

ANY IDEAS LADS dont want to get rid the dogs a cracker and killing gear already

had terriers for 15yrs but only got into lurcher afew years ago.ive got loads of pacients when it comes to dogs,but its wearing a bit thin with this one.ANY IDEAS PLEASE REPLY

Saluki x's can be hard work, first thing from a pup I'd be drumming in its brain is the recall comand, they can be head strong thats the problem.......

I'd keep him away from hunting and get your recall solid first............

Saluki types are the most independant wanting to be self employed dogs there are: been said before, but anything bred to endure the sort of conditions their breed treats as every day normal in the desert countries just has to be very very tough indeed, and posessed of that sort of grit, determination and sheer bloody minded tenacity needed to run down a hare or gazelle in extreme conditions.

One of mine was the most horrible dog in the world until he hit 2 years, when he suddenly came right and was a dream to own. I add that I was very hard on him: he was not the shrinking violet type at all and you could be very hards on: usually by shaking him, I never hit him, just shook him by the scruff, but he did have the right sort of temperament to take it. Other dogs I've had you only had to speak harshly to and they'd p*ss themselves.

Its a question of knowing your dog: is he a 'bounce right back' kind of dog? The thing is you have to love them as much as you scold them, these dogs.

Does he retrieve? If he does then your'e half way there as you can get him obsessed with a rabbit skin dummy to fetch. In the same way a falconer gets his birds attention by whirling the lure to bring it in, you can try and do the same with your dog. Get him obsessed with finding it in long grass to begin with where there's no rabbits or whatever. Make it a wildly exciting game and praise him madly and play the fool when he finds it: you could even attach it to a length of string to begin with if he's likely to run off with it: that way you can reel him in gently once he's found and grabbed it.

I've got through to several 'huntaway' dogs like that, but it needs time and patience as the last thing you ever do is be angry with them when they do come in. Good luck.

very true dont hunt with them when there being like mines got saluki in it and she took the pure pish at 8 month old

tryed everthing used collar in the end ,but shes now over a year and starting to hunt with her she loves it, loves to bring stuff back to show me whats shes caught.

exellent advise above,had this problem a couple of months ago with my collie cross,mainly puting nose down and switching his ears off,but yes recall training is a must first, and the dog will eventualy learn to come back quick as it sinks in that he needs to use the lamp.

thanks for the advice but today his the final straw,hes jumped on my 2 year old son knocked him to the floor and bust his nose. sorry to say hes going IST £300 take him, he ll kill gear for fun.its just hard very work,if you can get him sorted out it will be a match dog for some 1.

thats only if hes not sold before hand.

i seen the sire to your dog run on tape, exellent hare killer,if the dog is out like its sire the problem is worth sorting out and sticking with the dog, what is the dam?

yeah good dog mate , my pals just had a litter out of his bitch n benji , keep at him mate , hes only 10 month so hes just a silly puppy, keep him on a lead for a bit and dont let him loose til you think hes matured a bit especially dont let off with another puppy cos they just make each other worse, i got 2 bitches the same both off together n its an hour till they come back, you could try taking another familiar dog but keep one on the lead so he will come back, it works for me
