Hi all

Im new to the forum and to the Sport/Hobby of air rifleing :hmm:

My need today is i am about to get into it after shooting some of my friends rifles had some fun and wanted to buy my own just for some targets and tin can sort of stuff, dont see my self shooting rabbits or anything,

I have narrowed my choice down to 2 rifles both very different read all the reviews and watched all the vids on the "youtube", and was woundering if there was anybody out there that had or does own them and give me some guidence

Gun 1: Webley Rebel .177 single shot pneumatic air rifle 8 pumps for full 8.5 ft/lbs power.

some say that after 4 pumps its pretty much un-pumpable so not being able to use the rest of the power is a bit of a killer really, but it does look really nice and a chap in a gun shop by me showed one to me the other day and it was love at first sight but then after reading reviews went looking again,

Which brings me to Gun 2: SMK XS79 co2 single shot .177 co2 powered air rifle 800fps worked out with a pellet 0.53g i think it was 11.8ft/lbs which sounds good, but of course theres the storys of loss of power in the cold because of something to do with the co2 being cold. but apat from that sounds like a winner.

If you intend using these rifles at some point in the future for hunting, do not buy the pump up, if you wound an animal the follow up 2nd shot takes to long, so is far from humane. And regardless of what other people say, we all fail with the first shot sometimes, no matter how hard we try not to. I'd give the SMK a miss also, as imho these Chinese made guns are low in price but also very low in quality. Both these rifles would be fine for back garden plinking but I feel if you do become a serious airgunner you'll soon outgrow them and want a better rifle.

Why not buy 2nd hand but go for a decent quality springer, like an HW80, HW77, AA TX200 etc. Any one of these would be great for hunting, HFT (well maybe not the 80) and killing cans in the back garden.

Whats your budget ????

Id forget the 2 you have posted mate.

They are not the best quality rifles, and if you ever decide to get into the sport more seriously than just the back yard plinking you talked about they will have their floors and you will have to buy again.

The best advice that I can give you is get a good condition but second hand Weihrauch HW95 in .177 or .22.

This rifle will excel at anything that you can throw at it from tin cans in the garden to metal targets to (when your up to it and if practised enough) you do later decide to hunt with it, 50 yard rabbits.

Cheers chaps for the reply's, some sound advice there

Grayling - my budget is around the 150 mark

taking all that into consideration i really dont think ill move on from plinking anytime in near future, so as for buying another gun later in life doesnt worry me to much id rather take baby steps as it were and just get my targeting right first,

Im due a visit to a brilliant little bait and gun shop this weekend so i will have a look at whats on the shelf and see whats on offer taking your thaughts into consideration

Cheers chaps

If your stuck for cash, and want a recoiless rifle the Webley Rebel is being sold for £99.00 in Market Street Wellington Telford. available in both calibres it is easily tweaked to 11 foot pounds plus. I would recomend it in .22 only because its a calibre that would perhaps have more knock down power on rabbits. not everyone can depend on head shots at longish ranges.

I picked up a hw99 (wiehrauch) for £140 sh, great rifle. The cost of the 88g co2 is too expensive for plinking, you would need a bulk fill conversion. I would also stay away from pump UPS.

Zini knows what he is talking about, check out his YouTube chanel verminhunters tv.

Atb. Roy.

if he sees vermin hunters tv he WILL want a hw97kt lol

but yeah seriously try get a second hand hw95

".....had some fun and wanted to buy my own just for some targets and tin can sort of stuff, dont see my self shooting rabbits or anything."

Both the rifles you listed would be fine for this, virtually every respondant has suggested you will want something better if you start on the bunnies. That is as may be, not everyone does, if you are intending just some targets and tin can sort of stuff, as you say, then you will have fun with these!

If you want to move up to shooting live things then I would suggest you want better than some have suggested, so stick with it and get what you want!
