perfectly legal on permission  ... but i dont suppose anyone would kick up a fuss if you werent

Ouch! Dangerous assumption, my friend! Work it out; If ye doing it where permission's just too involved to simply ask for, then chances are ye Not on a farm. Right? So that probably equates with some 'public' ground somewhere.

Now, in uk 'public' tends to mean Council controlled, doesn't it? Wasteground. River banks. Parks and open spaces. All council lands at the end of the day.

I used to hunt rats in Hull. John Prescott's own 'back garden'. I went along a public footpath beside a railway track. (Yeah, and RailTrack are another notoriously snotty bunch!). Hunted them in the 'decorative' vegetation borders that doubled as a tipping ground for the local householders.

Tell ye what; As soon as that bloody law came in mate, I was out of there! :icon_eek: Only takes one busy body with a mobile phone and things could get Very nasty, Very soon! Think about it: Copper turns up. Ye tell him ye have no permission to hunt with ye Dog. He's obliged to report the matter to the council ~ probably believing no action will be taken. Then it lands on some jumped up clerks desk and what have we? Their big oppertunity to crucifie one of those 'Blood Sports' types flouting Their new law on Their very ground?! Ye can see where that might all lead to?

And the old, " No court in the country would ...... " arguement? Sorry. Who'd have thought any " Government " would ever afford Legal Protection to Rats?! F*ckin have though, haven't they?

Bottom line is; Things get that little bit further 'out of control' mate and they could well end up Legally confiscating ye Dog! :icon_eek:

Well, I for one didn't fancy testing that little chain of events. Not just for a busmans holiday on a few scabby rats! You make up ye own minds about it :hmm:

Very true Ditch Shitter, I never really thought about it that deeply... but i suspect your quite right.... You'll just need to exercise some caution and be sensible about what your doing.... but dont start panicking if you go for a wander by the canal and you kill a rat....

you could get killed crossing the road, your dog could die after getting bitten by a rat, theres risks in everything, peronally i wouldnt let it stop me, by all means mooch along the river bank but dont go dressed like rambo, people walk there dogs as you have been doing if it kills a rat on the walk, tuff.

wise words, dont carry a spade or a smoker, but a walking stick can be useful for opening holes and has a genuine and reasonable use for walking with  dont look like your off ratting just for a walk and well if the dog kills a few rats fair enough, my little dog has killed a few rats and also a fair few rabbits in hedges, however on every occasion i have been just out for a walk or a run and the dog was just with me B)

Same here, a few friends of mine go bushing and ratting in all manner of places, one of the most welcome places to rat are in Flat bin sheds.

I know its not the same as at a river bank and what not, but most people in the flats round here are sick to the back teeth with the council doing sweet f*ck all about rats running around their bin sheds flats and gardens, and will welcome you and a couple of terriers with open arms to help sort the problem if even for a short while.

Then again, what Ditch Shitter makes perfect sense, so do take what he has said on board.
