Ricky-N.p.p 0
feild craft is learnt on the feild ! not on a pc ! but i suposse i could give ye some pointers ! i always give burrows time to settle after i have netted all the holes, quite often i will go and nett another set of burrows after netting the first because no matter how quiet ye try to be the rabbitts will hear you walking about on top ! I always whistle when i'm feeding the ferrets or whistle and give them treats (ferretone and such like) so if ye do think ye have a kill in then ye can just whistle them out, ,my two older jills are 3 yrs old now and have never laid up once ! touch wood or if yer working burrows in alot of cover it helps to set a day aside before ye start ferreting on permission to clear the cover back. we never smoke/piss or talk whilst over the burrows we are ferreting either ! alwys use tent pegs instaed of wooden ones as they are easier to get in on frosty mornings, no need to stamp pegs into the ground ect ect ect hope this helps Quote Link to post
Guest foxtrack
you only seem to dig to the good ferrets the bad ones dont work so deep and avoid getting stuck but dont be hasty with the spade Quote Link to post

Guest foxtrack
well al i can say mate is your either working small places or your leaving a lot off rabbits under ground. bad ferrets will not go down the vertical drops that most decent places have. i dont think they have the balls to do so thats why you only get the good ones stuck they drop down and cant get back out Quote Link to post

spade 224
Can't emphasise enough the point about not being too hasty in getting the spade going. Not l;ong after I started ferreting I though I had a lay up and was getting a reading of between 6 and 7 feet. After about 40 mins got digging. Got to about 3 feet and out shot bunny into a net with ferret close behind. You will learn with experience but you will never know it all. Quote Link to post

richie 1
I always leave a box with a hole in one end(with some straw and some milk and food in it i know its each to their own but if i ever had a ferret lay up, i would leave a trap by the last hole i entered it down and block all the others to get the ferret back but i wouldnt leave any food inside just incase it attracted an unwanted visitor to set it off. i would just leave some of my ferrets bedding inside and cover the cage with a bit of old sack to protect it from the weather. luckily enough i have never had a ferret lay up as i always free feed them so they are never hungry and have no need to eat under, but they always kill under ground as i either hear the rabbits screams or see the blood on there faces . richie Edited June 30, 2007 by richie Quote Link to post

Guest The Big Fish
you only seem to dig to the good ferretsthe bad ones dont work so deep and avoid getting stuck but dont be hasty with the spade You may be onto something there Foxtrack Personaly, i want ferrets that stick with the rabbit and are capable of actually killing the thing if it wont bolt. On some of the ground that we have in Hampshire, the warrens are fairly deep, and even some of the shallower ones are near impossible to dig due to the make up of the ground, with the compact chalk and flint. At the moment i am blessed with some fairly impressive ferrets, but ive had some "stinkers" in the past, that just skulked about never realy doing much apart from being a pain in the arse. If your a ferret and you want to be in the 'A team' you got to be able to find and deal with the coney in question, no matter how deep he might go. Quote Link to post
