fieldsportsman 107
i have called various adverts, who claim to have working lurchers. the pups were £150, when i asked weather it was possible to see the parents working, they replied and said they didnt have time. In my opinion, that is expensive for a dog that wont work, however, someone with genuine working line may charge £200-250 for a pup, but at least you know the odds are high with it working. So what would you be happyu to pay for a genuine working dog. 1 Quote Link to post

Chid 6,542
3 pups ive bought in the past £120 (didnt see parents work) £100 (didnt see parents work) free (seen both parents work on all legal quarry over here) and the one i seen the parents working ended up being pts to me money and distance shouldnt be a problem for the right pup or for the right type your looking for ... i also think a pup over £150 needs to be out of something special and from parents i can see working , 6 Quote Link to post
kybosh 5
Hi, Regardless of working or not, the pups arnt out the box workers when older, they still need time and effort investing into them, In my opinion (which may be wrong in some peoples eyes) say you buy a whippet pup, for £200 no working parents, or a whippet pup £300 with working parents, the efforts in both dogs will need to be the same to get them to make the grade. Because the parents dont work doesnt mean the pup wont work, thats down to you as the owner, Although some dogs simply do not make the grade even with alot of training. Plus, if the person who cant show you it working, maybe he payed for a stud, and they cant show you the mum as she isnt fit. Maybe it wasnt possible. ATB kybosh Quote Link to post
Ray Mears 272
if they were that good would they need to advertise? i think its abit backwards these days people are willing to have shit for less money then pay a price for well bred lines. well thats how i see it 1 Quote Link to post
jcm 2,327
See that's a tricky one because the person selling the pups has the dam obviously but might not have the sire, so it might not be possible to see parents work, Tbh if you speak to the person face to face you should be able to judge weather they are genuine by the way they are talking and acting. I like to view a litter when there are about 3 to 4 weeks old to make sure that they are healthy and so I can see the whole litter and I try to arrange the sire to be there as well with owner so you can have a bit crack on with both of them then if I like what I see I will go back to take a pup from the litter. look up 406
the thing is mate the people your ringing up dont no you .and your asking to see there dogs run ,for one alote off people use stud dogs and the bitch wouldent be able to run anyhow .so in the future ask for pics of parents or go and see them in flesh if your not trusting atb Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
if you go and see a litter I think you usually know if the breeder is a blagger or not, as long as I can see some kind of evidence the parents have seen some work I would be happy to take a chance as you do with any pup. I am more interested in how the parents and pups especially have been reared, I like to see well fed pups in a good environment being cared for so they have the best chance of success if I put the time in to it. Price wise anything over a couple of hundred quid for a lurcher seems crazy, I always thought of lurcher and terrier work as a working mans sport. Strong honest litters with decent knowledgable owners who know their stuff dont breed litters for the money in the 1st place. Pat Edited November 19, 2012 by redpat1 2 Quote Link to post
Wxm 1,638
the best lurchers i've had have been free - £50 i've also spent £150 - £180 and ended up with a pile of shite the best i ever had cost me £23 and i never even got to see the dam or sire, i choose her out of about 4 or 5 pups that a lad bought (i was 13 at the time, 12 years ago) bought a black collie greyhound bitch 3 year old for 150 promised everything ith her, took her out couple of days after i bought her slipped her on a rabbit. straight down the beem i thought what a bitch, literaly jumped straight over the rabbit and fcuked of never to be seen again. :censored: wounded :censored: price should never be an issue unless you havnt got the money Quote Link to post
boyo 1,398
imo £150 for a well reared pup is giving it away if theres pups on the bitch she obviously aint ready for running also most people take the bitch to a stud dog so its not really up to the pups breeder to say if you can see the sire working plus most pups tend to be born in spring or summer so not much work being done then .if you had wanted to see the sire of my pups working you would have had a eight hour round trip do do so . try buying a well bred coursing pup for that money their usually a lot lot more .and normally all booked os sold straight away .also theres many a pup out of workers ended up uselesss same as there is out of non workers . 2 Quote Link to post
jcm 2,327
Tbh with buying pups you take a chance on every single one, I think how the pup turns out Is a lot to do with the owner, any pup brought on right should make a decent animal Quote Link to post
Ray Mears 272
pics dont tell you if the dogs a pile of shit or is top notch. some people want to see dam or sire or even both run so they no what there hard earned is going towards. if it means a 8 hour round trip so be it, other people will chuck the cash around at any pile of shit and no doubt end up with some right crap. but having a pup from well bred lines is not the be all and end all. you only hear now and again dogs making a name for there self that cost feck all or 20 quid down the boozer years ago. not to mention the people who claim there dogs to be coursing bred put a load of fake pictures up £300 price tag and then there on preloved for £50. some people are out there to make a buck and will have your pants down in the process. time spent reasearching the pups asking a load of questions or simply knowing the bloke is a good egg is well worth the time and effort Edited November 19, 2012 by Ray Mears 1 Quote Link to post
