AndyKelly 251
sunday was a day i sort of got myself into bother before i'd even laid a net. woke up sunday morning thinking i was off out on my own and the conditions for ferreting were cock on,a cold frosty morning and the air was still nipping my face quite perfik. let the dog out to do her buissness and the mrs was shouting blue murder that all the doors in the house were open and she was not heating the street. so i told her to get out of my way then realized that because of that i had to do my own tea and sandwiches ( bad move methinks) off to feed the chickens and my mate ( who i thought wasnt coming) bombs round the corner in the van so after spending a good half hour defrosting the car i had to return it up the house and jump in the van. after ferreting the land we were at a couple of sundays ago we decided to do a steep hillside on the farm miles from anywhere but it had a promising look about it. started to panic a bit when i hit the bottom of the net bag though. there was roughly 150 nets out and i thought it would be ample how wrong could i be!. decided to work the ferrets from one end of the set to the other and my mate was using the ferrets infront and i was behind catching the kill. lucky enough all the bunnies seemed to run forward and not double back and cause problems. the long net was impractical to use in this area due to high winds and scrub was still quite high. was quite surprised with this set that they seemed to be many interlinking chambers and patience was definaly a virtue as you had to wait and let the ferrets do their job. the jills worked a treat and poor old fred spent the day in the box as he was only there as a back up. 25 rabbits bolted from the warren and 24 were caught its always the one that gets away that you look out for the next time, after grabbing the bunny i fell down the hillside and it got away and now my ass is black and blue today as arnie says watch out rabbit cause i'll be back!!!! after worrying about the lack of rabbits and talking to people in the area who have had farmers putting drop boxes down i can hopefully fingers crossed and all that still say there is canny pockets of rabbits on my permission 1 Quote Link to post
rabbitcatcher 1 287
Pleased to here you had a good day Andy,as you know I went out on Sunday after picking some nets up off you on Saturday we decided to try some land my nephew has up Middleton teesdale, when we got there the land looked promising but every bury we done was either empty or holding 1 rabbit, all the signs were there that a few rabbits were at home, plenty of trade to and from the holes, fresh scrats fresh sh*t so we but after netting up and running a few trammels out all that was at home was 1 rabbit, we ended up with 6 rabbits in total and we done about 9 bury,s some big some small, all I can think is that there's other ferreters doing this land and they must have beat us to it as my nephew hasn't been on the land for quite some time, but not to worry there's always next week, atb rabbitcatcher 1 Quote Link to post
