Ideation 8,216
Went out friday with Joe777 on here, he came to mine early doors and we headed off to one of mine and johnnyboys permissions. We got down there early, and got the dogs out of the car, we had Finn and Joe's young 3/4 grey 1/4 collie sapling Dace with us, and were using joes two jills. The plan was to have a bit of sport and try to give Dace some ferreting experiance. We let the dogs have a race about and made for a hedge that i fancied doing, which we did last year in two parts and had around 50 out of i think. As we made our way toward the hedge in question, we saw about a half dozen rabbits run into it from the field so were feeling pretty confident of some sport. The dogs started to show interest in the first part of the hedge, and a long its length at intervals. We netted up the first two sets, but left the holes on joes / daces side open on the first and sent down the ferret, out popped one my side into a net and another on joes side, which dace ran up the hedge and back netted itself. We contiuned a long the hedge, netting a couple of warrens at a time, and working the two jills through. The rabbits trickled out and it was soon obvious that this year we were not going to get anywhere near the same score as last year. By the end of the hedge we had fourteen healthy rabbits. Dace had been working very well, ignoring the ferrets and pinning the rabbits that bolted his side, like a pro. Finn was handy for most of it, but a bit ofa pain truth be told. He hadnt been out i a few days and i dont think he liked working with another male dog, he kept wanting to do one and go hunting by himself. Eventually he did, and disappeared for 20 mins, returning suddenly covered in mud etc, where he had been trying to trench something out. The highlight for joe was i think, seeing Dace connect with his first real, live, running bunny We made our way back to the car, and on the way finn marked a small warren, and so did Dace Another skill learnt We netted up and bolted one out. Two mins later finn pushed one out of cover and just missed it as it made a warren. The same happened a few mins later on a verticle road side hedge/bank, we netted up the two holes, and just as i had, Finn put another rabbit up and drove it into one of the nets, bonus Unfortunatly we lost the intended victim as it bolted round the net and dropped into the road, and we couldnt let the dogs follow. Anyway, a good day with a tidy lad, some good sport and good banter Really nice to see the young dog bloom, and you can see joe has put huge amounts of work into him 4 Quote Link to post
