LUKAS 2
i am new to the ferreting sport & would like to know when first starting out do i really need a ferret finder? firstly i was trying to keep the cost down until i was more experienced & a couple of people have warned me that the collar is just something that a ferret called get tangled up with... Some views on this would be greatly appreciated and i really don't want to risk anything happening to one of my newly purchased Jills they are part of the family now. Quote Link to post

The one 8,481
You can ferret with out them mate but if the ferrets kill below ground your just going to have to sit and wait on them coming out . moneys always going to be a problem as buying everything you need to go ferreting nearly needs a lottery win so just get a few nets and get out there mate and save up for a locator etc 1 Quote Link to post
saintsman54 15
A few mk1 finder and collars have gone for 50 quid on eBay recently so it might be worth having a look around for a good deal. Quote Link to post
LUKAS 2
Thanks Lads i am going to take your advice..i will just give it a go with a few nets on some small places & hopefully snag a bargain finder on ebay or somewhere Quote Link to post
mhopton 807
if your going to work the jills without a finder its best to give them some milk and bread 1hr before you go out as its not to heavy on the belly and they wont sleep down below good hunting and enjoy Quote Link to post
LUKAS 2
Thanks for the advice i will definitely try that they are only babies at the moment so will take it easy..i have 2 older hobs that i might try but gut feeling is they gonna too big as they are pretty large. mhopton 807
dont worry about the size as they will go any place they want too.ive two young jill,s who are just learning but are working really well i put it down to the 20ft black 4"pipe in the back garden they play in and i give them the bread n milk so they dont kill down below 1 Quote Link to post
AndyKelly 251
dont give them milk and bread - ferrets are lactose intolerant and bread has no nutritious value whatsoever. when you feed your ferrets a bowl of alpha or other ferret biscuits in the cage at all times with plenty of water and fresh meat once a day . if you dont have a finder ( i have only just started using one after 40 years) only try small holes if your ferrets are young to build there confidence ( and yours). its the best sport in the world and with a little patience and a lot of coffee you will be fine happy hunting atb andy 1 Quote Link to post
mhopton 807
never new that andy ive always given them bread (half a slice)with milk some times an egg too before i go out and know a few more lads who do the same. i took a ferret to the vets after a rabbit took a chunk out of it she was asking about food i feed them and told her about bread n milk before i work them she said it was fine but dont over do it , they get dry food all the time unless ive been out then they get a rabbit to chew on for a day or two. they only get the bread n milk before going out hunting as i find they still hunt without killing down (touch wood) a few lads dont give them anything before going out but they always have to dig co's the ferret kills down and stays down but thanks i will keep that in mind Quote Link to post
AndyKelly 251
you can use watered down kitten milk bud as it has the lactose taken out of it Quote Link to post

blond 8
ive never used one, but went out the other week with a mate with my ferts and his ferts and sent my hob down the bury, after 20 mins off no show, we put the collar on my jill and she went straight to the hob, he got a bunny only a foot down, so it wasnt to bad a dig, so im definately going to get a finder now for piece of mind, had the hob three years and hes never done that before 1 Quote Link to post
