contact your local hunts-offer to do some puppy walking

Only do this if you have room and time to keep a couple of hounds for a few months "puppy walking" is quite demanding and it certainly wouldn't guarantee any digging whatsoever

the lad could walk pups at the kennels

Im just keeping it real. Do you know what puppy walking is? I'm just trying to warn him, if you ask to walk puppies don't be surprised when a couple get dropped off at your house

Terrier work isn't rocket science but any great terrier man will say learn from your own mistakes. Most terriers will have a good sense in hunting unless you get a total retard which is pretty hard. I think most terriers out of the paper will give you some sense of working ability. Start with a rat and a terrier, he will do the rest or should interest and build with the little guy from there. Dogs with a big name doesn't mean shart so get one that seems smart and trainable be given away for free in the paper, which there is a ton I bet in your neck of the world. Have a go and if the dog shows interest in getting the rat he might work and guess what you didn't spend a dime! Get a couple of books that will give you a general idea and if with a enough sense you will be fine. I crossed over from bulldogs into hunting terriers and no help. I can show you digs and game that any man would be proud of. Plus I am in America and you have leaps and bounds more accessible knowledge than I. I can count all the people who dig terriers near men on one hand that be driven to in 5 or less! I feel your pain. You want bad enough you will learn yourself, I promise and if you don't you probably were not meant to own terriers. These dogs are gritty and know how to get the job done and when times get bad you will have to do the same yourself. Be as game as your terriers.

Well once the whelps are all jabbed up they go "out to walk" usually in couples to farmers, subscribers etc where the idea is they learn their names, get stock broken and learn to walk on the lead and are hopefully socialized well enough to set them in good sted for the future ahead of them. Once they get too big and too much to handle they return to kennels. That's why I picked up on it if the lad asked if he could walk puppies he'd get a bit of a shock if instead of going for a walk with a pup or two he ended up with two dropped off at his house for the next six months  there's nothing doomsville or however you put it about giving the youngster correct information, as it happens it would appear he's contacted a club and hopefully they can help him out so all the best with that John1

humour again bud humour . and as if a hunt would give two hound pups to some one who just turned up at the kennel , your imformation is doomsville listern any young lad wanting to get involved with hunting , should write to his nearest pack introduce himself , then ask to help out at the kennels when he can its a great way to get involved , and most kennle huntmen would jump at the chance of a bit of help at weekends and holidays , unless your born into the game or have close freinds involved it may well be your only entry in to hunting ,

I'd wait till your face is known at the kennels / hunt before offering to walk puppies as imo a decent kennelman or huntsman won't just put them out to any old stranger, after all there the future of the kennels..

Offer a hand in the flesh house, anyone in there right mind wouldn't refuse that, lol

Sorry I don't get your humour, earlier you agreed with the post about the lad going to kennels to walk some pups so that to me tells me that you obviously didn't know what "puppy walking" was and now I've explained it you're ridiculing the idea saying that hunts wouldn't give him pups????? and why does it have to be a Kennel Huntsman and not a Professional or an Amateur Huntsman or Master or even Kennelman further to your comments on the pairing up thread I really think you don't know too much about the workings and logistics involved in the day to day running of a pack of hounds and a hunting day and that's fine but then maybe you shouldn't be giving out advice and commenting on such matters.

Option1 go to your local hunt and offer to look after a couple of hound pups

Option2 go to your local hunt and offer to work in the flesh house

Option3 go to your local fmwtc and see if some kind terrier lad will take you out.

I wonder which option he will choose ?

  ;) you dont seem to grasp humour or the full content bud , and your right your knowlege is overwelming think you will find the lad is from blackpool lancs , now me not knowing much and that would hazzard a guess just a guess the hunts within his reach we will start with mounted , the holcome not the most wecoming pack but may welcome a young lad or the pendel forest , not knowing the young lads transport situation i think the cathra , melbreak , ullswater, lunesdale, conistan, esk n en just mite be to far , , Edited by gonetoearth
