not bad for a little one

Recommended Posts

I got a call from the farmer up the road on Sunday, moaning about the rabbits on his drilled fields, we had tried to ferret 1 of the hedges on this bit a few weeks back but it was inpenetrable in places, so we are waiting for him to cut it back a bit as promised.

I said I would be up with the dog in the week so last night seemed as good as any ( no wind this week but at least it's black), this is tough ground big hilly fields with the bottom half mainly arable and the top, really hilly sheep fields. I realise this is not ideal land for my little whippet x, but thats what I've got so she'd have to do  , It's nearly always long slips as I'm sure the rabbits see other lamps than mine and this would be the case in the first field the rabbit was sat out but it was still at least an 80yrd slip, she made the ground up well and after 1 turn on the hedge she nailed it, I would like to lie and say she retrieved perfectly to hand, but she didn't, so we met halfway , coming up the brow of the hill another sat out with us between it and home a simple straight line pick up no fuss 2 in the bag first field done.

The next field is another big big drilled field, lamp on and 2 run straight to home no point slipping, we walk up the hill against the fence line and have a quick look at the top 1 sat out, I send her half way in the dark and flick the light on and she's on it she nails that 1 on the run again, I see another fairly close to home and send her down more in hope, it's another long slip but the rabbit runs out into the field and thats where it ends 4 in 4 slips.

she misses 1 in the next stubble field and the next 2 fields are dead. It's a long walk around the next bit and we had 11 out of 1 of the hedges a couple of weeks back there were still a few about but they were gone at the first sign of the lamp, she had another in the next stubble field after a good run and then another in the field above, this was the best she had ran this season only missng the odd 1, only the retrieve letting her down.

As we came back up the arm we reached the opposit side of the field we had 2 in earlier 1 was sat a little out, so I slipped her, it didn't move and was picked out of it's seat.

I only walked 1 sheep field and we had another out of it and watched a small herd of fallow jump the fence back into the wood

So it was 8 from the farm not bad going for a little whip x on big fields I reckon

On the way home I chnced a quick look in a horse paddock which hold a few ( I keep meaning to ask for permission for ferreting, so I was checking there was still afew there  ), they were sat out as usual and another was quickly in the bag, I saw some lighs on the road below, the lamp was off and as it came by I saw it was a police car , although not doing anything wrong as such I thought it best to call it a night, so didn't quite make double figures, still a nice walk out and pleased with my little rabbiting dog

Cheers lads,

She is Bill, got her faults as I've said before, but she try's hard enough.... She's getting better with the ferrets all the time, which is what I think she'll eventually shine at ( with a bit of luck), and she can catch on the lamp.... I'm still looking at bringing a bigger dog in next year maybe, it's hard work for her on some of this land, but can't knock her effort....

How's Zac doing now, is he fully recovered?
