Ferrets and the Harris

Recommended Posts

Well today was the ferrets and harris hawks first venture of the season on sum local land . To be honest me and my mate were"nt expecting to much as the female harris hadnt done much flying due to a late molt and me with the ferrets as it had just been to bloody wet and cover still being high . So decided on a a farm were it was more or less hedgerow work .

Started on this bit hedge bolting a rabbit but it just ran so far along the hedge and dived for cover just as the hawk was going to strike .

Put my little albino in to were the rabbit had went and a few minutes later the rabbit made its escape across this field towards cover of the wood with the harris on its tail . Lucky for buggsy the harris just aint up to speed yet and it escaped to be hopefully hunted another day .

With not much happening along this bit hedgerow and a quick look at another hedge decided to move to the furthest part of the farm for a bit look at sum more hedgerow that often holds the odd rabbit . On arriving there signs looked good holes kicked out shit by entrances and general activity . Theres more holes on this bit hedge so the albino jill and poley jill were going to be used . One part of the hedge is higher so me mate and the hawk were doing that side and i was on the lower side nettig a few holes here and there .

Both jills in and out working there way along the hedge then we had our first bolt rabbit coming out of a tiny bolt hole in the field on my mates side . Rather than the rabbit running the hedge it motored acrosss the field and this time that played to the advantage of the hawk . With the rabbit jinkin here and there the hawk nailed it with a good strike . So that was our first rabbit in the bag .

Ferrets bolted 1 to the nets on my side so that was another in the bag . Moved a little further down the hedge and bolted a rabbit which ran very tight along the hedge and didnt give the hawk much chance . To be honest after that last bolt there was no more action . Ferrets did there bit and the hawk but there just wasnt the rabbits at home .

It was a nice little look out for the ferrets and hawk to start us off . We werent expecting much as there really is a shortage of rabbits round here . It was more or less us just getting started and get the ball rolling .
