Hi everyone

I've been floating around the WWW and can rarely find any good advice out there so settled on a place where everyone knows it all!

I've been looking to start target shooting at a range but wanted to get an idea of cost etc how hard is it to get a rifle, do I need a license for an air rifle? Would small bore be better? How active is the sport in my area etc etc and an abundance of other questions..

So don't mind me I'll just stay at the back and soak it all in....

just thought I'd say hello

Jonny

hey jonny welcome to THL! you've picked a good area to live in for airgun shooting; there must be some clubs around you and people on here will be able to point you in the right direction. In terms of licensing, you don't need a license for an air rifle under 12 ft/lb of energy, anything above that and it needs an FAC (fire arms certificate). for this you need to have background checks, police checks, an interview and it needs to be legally stored (police approved gun safe etc) there's more to it than that I think, but I don't have one. this applies to all other forms of rifle shooting, and you need to get the right ticket for the right gun, as well as things like moderators. there is also a limit on the amount of ammunition you can have at any one time. The great thing about sub 12ft/lb is they are much cheaper to maintain, there's no limit on ammunition and the string of air rifles is a little more relaxed. (you can be done for not proving that you are taking sensible safety precautions against unauthorised use, e.g. by children, should there be an accident or if the police suspect you're not complying to the law and check!)

I pulled a couple of clubs up just searching the internet in the Gateshead area that might be worth a shot?

the best thing to do is go down to a club and chat to the people there, see what takes your fancy. They will also be able to give you great advice about certificates if you want to go down that route.

Enjoy your stay mate, THL seems to be packed with people from your area, so you won't be short of new and local friends!
