broke hock

Recommended Posts

my dog broke his hock around 5-6 month ago he had an operation to fill all the cracks in his bone with bone from a different part of his leg bone and reposition his tendons that run down the hock to the original position, they also put metal around this joint and told me that the metal is there to stay as it will fuse with the bone anyway 5-6 month down the line hes very energetic and runs round the garden all day with my whippet and play fights so im just wondering if hes any good to be taking out again? any help will be appreciated.

Depends entirely on the seriousnes of the break. Some dogs come back as good as new, others, Like Max's, appear ok until tried, others never show any signs of hope. Best to ask the vets opinion, and if they say try the dog, well... give it a go !! But your heart will allways be in your mouth every time you run the dog !! Best of luck, mate, hope it turns out well !!

Cheers.

My dog has just had a chip removed from his hock yesterday. Even though its only small the hock is a very complex joint and even very minor injurys can effect the dogs running ability. I hoping for the best but only time will tell. Even the vet is unsure as to how well he will recover as they don't treat many injuries like this, as most get retired to pet homes or put to sleep. Not many folk are willing to rest a dog for a full season when they only have 3 or 4 seasons at peak performance anyway. Plus it's pretty tiring resting a injuries dog. You carnt even let them out for a pee, without putting a lead on it and waiting with it. But that's the joys of running dogs.
