Help! Permission lost due to equine mystery

Hi guys, I've just lost a permission due to the horses being spooked. I only use an air rifle..

 

Any theories from those who might know that may explain it would be most welcome.

Friday 9th November 2012

 

On a walk through the woods to setup the trail camera, I received a phone call from the owner of my permission.

 

She wanted to know whether I had been using a shotgun on the cereal field. I informed her that no, I hadn't and I didn't own a shotgun. The reason for her enquiry is her horses acted strangely last night and one of them "aborted".

This was interesting as upon my walk home I noticed the horses in the field below running in circles and snorting. As I left they were lined up looking in my direction. I could only think that my couple of crow calls had peaked their interest. I did consider texting her, but decided against it as they didn't appear overtly distressed and I've often seen horses galloping at the end of the day possibly venting energy.

But as a layman, its hard to say. Equally, what I witnessed may have been unrelated.

When told her this, she wondered if the pitch of the caller had upset them. Potentially, though I wouldn't have thought to the level of inducing a miscarriage.

 

Suffice to say, she has understandably asked me to abandon shooting there. Whilst she has promised to call if the biopsy on the foetus comes back negative, I am rather pessimistic.The very fact I was present the day the incident occurred warrants enough doubt to ensure my indefinite exile.

 

It is early yet, but I believe it may be better to concentrate on securing another permission than to wait and hope.

ive shot a few horse places over the years and horses do odd things for no apparent reason, i was at a stud farm back end of last summer shooting rabbits with the rapid as i had done for 4 evenings previous, that evening one of the horses that had been normal for the previous days started to act strange, sctracting like mad on a fence post and then charging around the paddock like some crazed lunatic, this went on for about an hour so i phoned the owner, she came down and the horse was still going nuts. after finally calming it down she discovered it was being attacked by a swarm of horse flies. there was 5 or more other horses in this field but the horse flies were only attacking this one horse.

Just an off hand gamble but with the time of the year could it be fireworks?

 

Maybe they have made the horses skittish?

as above fireworks this time of year but could be owt, plastic bag blowing in wind are something at the other side or in the edge you only need to be spooked and it does set the others off,

i once had a similar problem on one of my permissons.it seemed some poachers dogs werent just happy with the rabbits.one night i went on the permisson and saw 3 or 4 lurchers chasing a young foal up and down the field obviouly outraged i rang the landowners and who in turn rang the bobbies,i believe in the end,the dogs and owners got there just desserts,but the foal also shortly after had to be put down.

That's an exageration, its not much louder than your looney tooned 95. Never hurts to chrono, lord knows ill have the time now.

i have a few horse infested perms i have found they dont bother about the lamp or the noise of the shot but the noise the pellet makes going through the air spooks some. unlike sheep that dont care about nothing.

Not sure that a biopsy will reveal anything conclusive.

 

I'm 99% certain I had no hand in it. I was at least -100 yards away. The 1% is the caller but it sounds like a crow!

Chrono says 789fps 11.5ft/lbs? AA fields so shouldn't be the rifle, besides, no shots were taken in their vicinity that day.

I don't like horses full stop. Weird unpredictable animals I don't care what anyone says, iv had my fair share of runnings with them ..2 to be precise, an I wouldn't go in same field as one again lol don't know what it is, but they just don't like me, an I don't like them
