Five suspected of animal cruelty arrested

Five local men have been arrested during raids in Darlington this morning as part of a joint operation between police and the RSPCA.

The men, four aged 18 and one aged 19, are suspected of animal cruelty and have been arrested for offences under the Animal Welfare Act. They are from the Firthmoor area of the town.

One of the 18-year-olds was also arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and cannabis plants were seized from the house he was living at.

Today’s intelligence-led operation took place following reports from the public of dogs being used to hunt and kill wildlife and domestic pets in the Darlington area.

Fifty police officers and 19 RSPCA officers were involved.

Eight dogs – six lurchers and two Labradors - have been seized, together with mobile phones, computers and paraphernalia associated with hunting.

Chief Inspector Mark Gent, of the RSPCA, said: “Where we have evidence that offences have taken place we will take action to bring the individuals involved before a court. I hope this sends a message to anyone involved in this kind of deliberate, abhorrent cruelty – we are actively seeking you and the next knock on the door could be us.”

Deputy Chief Constable Michael Banks said: “The force is committed to protecting its rural communities and tackling rural crime. Animal welfare is an issue at the heart of those communities and we hope that this morning’s raids reassure people that activities involving animal cruelty will not be tolerated.”

The men are in custody at Darlington police station and will be questioned today.

Have they committed these alleged acts ??

Live stock ?? Badgers ?? pets ??

Is this media sensualisation at its best ??

There must be an element of truth in the story however I don’t buy all what’s printed..

Lads killing cats is rife in the local press at moment, it dose nobody any favours but its hardly headline material. It’s not even news worthy in my opinion, there are more significant events that take place however they don’t receive media coverage.

To many bunny huggers with pen power.. And far to many dickheads with lurchers :censored:
