zonal marking?

Recommended Posts

I can see the theory to it as in its harder for forwards to block off a marker but a forward running towards goal is always going to have the jump on a defender jumping from a standing position.....swings and roundabouts i guess, maybe the modern game is more complicated than it needs to be

I remember when "man for man" marking came about, but it was usualy putting one defender to continualy mark one exceptionaly dangerous forward. That never realy worked out, as defenders were expected more and more to get around like fit professionals, rather than donkeys ! Now they talk about "zonal defending" ; as has already been said, it didn't work for Man City tonight ! Whatever happened to full backs and central defenders just doing their jobs and being fit enough to cover for each other !

Cheers.

Zonal marking is only really effective if your players are as well disciplined and as drilled as a military regiment IMO.. That's why I don't think it works all that well here with the 'get on your man and get stuck in' mentality that we have got..

Adopting zonal marking as a system which demonstrates that a manager is forward thinking, modern and 'european' in his tactical thinking.

Unfortunately it means that teams which adopt this system concede more goals and hasten the departure of the manager which adopted the system.

This is particularly true in England, where as has been said players have been brought up with man marking.

It's a classic example of fixing summat which ain't broke.

Bye bye Mancini.
