what choke what loads , for crow pigeon mixed days ?

hello lads im back from a long break from shotgun shooting iv got a hatsan escort 12g i cant hit shit with it ha ha , im better with my 410 !!

anyway its multi choke and iv had the full choke in and some poor gamebore 6 30g in it and the preformance is shite !!

i used to be able to hit things hard at 50 55 yards easy when i was younger but with this i cant work out leads etc .

anyway what chokes you guys got in and what loads you shooting on mixed days with crows and pigeons ?

ps asking for permmission is horrible i did 15 miles and 25 farms last week in one session and got not one permission !!

hello mate, are you sure your gun fits you because from what your describing it sounds like it doesnt, full choke probably doesnt help, I shoot with half in my escort and use anything between 28g 7.5s and 32g 5s.

check your gun fit because a 410 is going to pattern much tighter then a 12 even with full choke as pretty much all 410s are fixed at full to make up for the relatively small amount of lead in the air.

gun fit could be the issue i dont get the same sight picture when i point it i think im shooting high with it , if so where is the poor fit ?

im no expert mate and im sure someone a bit more knowledgable then me will probs correct me but i reckon your stock is too long.

either way the escorts have adjustable stocks so nip down the gunshop you got it from and ask them to give you a hand/some advice setting up the stock - its not that complicated to do. Essentially you want to have a gap of about 2-3 fingers (depending on how big your fingers are) between your nose and the ball of your thumb length wise and then if you stand in front of mirror and mount gun with eyes closed and then open them if the fit is right the bead should be in the centre of your pupil when you aim at the mirror, if its not then this is where the wedges that came with the stock come into play just have a bit of a play around and maybe shoot some pattern plates with it.

cant beat quarter choke mate,ive quarter in my semi and 2 quarter's in my o/u and i hit bird's out to 60 yards no problem,i do use 36g 4s for crow's though!!!!!!!! and 32g 6s for woodie's

I/C and half, in S/S and they both do me well but it all depends on what distance and whether you are flighting, roostshooting, decoying in close etc. A good happy medium is half

It also depends on whether you are just killing them or if you or somebody else are going to eat them!

stock fit i would say the stock is to short !!

feels unbalenced , unfortunatly this is an early model of escort with no stock shims or anything .

well just done half hour on you tube and learned all about gun fit , guess what its 2" to short for me !!

now i need to work out how the lengthen it , its a shame its a synthetic stock version i could have just added some nice wood to it .

im looking down over the rib rather than along it . might have a usable gun once this is sorted . then switch chokes and up loads looks like il be a few steps closer to hitting things rather than waisting cartradges .

Get one of the rubber re-coil pads , that will give you at least an inch maybe more

yeah i looked at them to , just not enough to make it worth doing .

iv got some oak im gonna look at fitting a shim of that see how it improves , if not im gonna sell it buy something with wood i can adjust alot easier .

2" too short sounds like a lot to me. Semi autos do tend to be shorter in the stock, but unless you are built like a 6ft gibbon you should not be that far out. Dont forget that when out you will have thicker clothing on and this can add upto a good inch of difference in winter vs summer. Try one of those slip on leather or neoprene but pads. You can always add a little more packing to make it more than 20mm. Once you have added the length you may find that the drop at comb and heel will increase so that you get the sight picture down the rib.

 

Take your gun to a gunshop and try the slip on pad out before you part with your cash.
