Out for a mooch

Recommended Posts

Out over this weekend on my bit of permission, what was looking good over the summer with a abundance of rabbits has been hit with the mix really bad., ;Was really looking forward to working Murphy this season, up till now my hunting has been confined to a bit of mooching and trying to stay within the right side of the law, spent the summer getting him fit for the job, he's been catching...tripping over lots of mixi rabbits, LoL,and in some respects gaining confidence but only on occasions being tested on a healthy rabbit. Going to get some more permission letters printed and posted fingers crossed I get some more land to work, it took me long enough getting this permission and god knows how many knock backs and letters sent..

On my way back after spending a couple of hours mooching Murphy's catch of the day was one very sad looking mixi rabbit that I dispatched and bagged as I do with all the mixi rabbits in the hope it might stop this bloody infection spreading more, Murphy started hunting up some ground and put up a big rabbit, I did try to call him back  , but he was glued to it and coursed it across three cropped fields followed by me, he gave it no quarter and stayed with it, when I got to the the 3rd field he was out of sight, to be honest my heart was in my mouth as bordering the other side of this field was a 6ft drop to a ditch, The good news is I found him in the ditch with his rabbit, he was okay not a mark on him, I guess the scrub around the ditch had broken his fall I managed to get him out still holding onto his prize.

My wife was out Christmas shopping and was going to pick the two of us up but I decided it would be wise to walk the 4 miles home,as I don't think she would have been to impressed with the colour or smell of Murphy grin.gif

Best way for permission is to actually go to the landowners front door and speek to them face to face writing letters is a lot less affective as u have to rember most farmers are old fashiond and want to see what you look like what car you drive. And what your attitude is like where as they can't see this through a letter I have been to a few smaller farms and asked permission I had a cupp with the farmer and a chat and then we even got in his truck and he showed me around so I new where I was allowed ect u will get on better if u go to there door the worst your get is a f**k off but atleast you have an awnser instead of waiting for a letter to come back once you have then been there a few times you can then ask him if he knows anyone of his freinds tht ground you could go huntin on once your in with one of them your eventually be in with all of his freinds and nabours like

Also a lot of farmers don't want to be messing around tellin you where can and can't go and what to do over letter they would prefer it if they can show you then and ther most landowners are fine with you hunting on there land as you are helping then keep the pest numbers down

Iv also given into the post an phone call idea. Better off chucking in a few quid petrol an doing abit of leg work. In two days I bagged two golf courses an four farms. How many by letter or phone call? Sweet f.a lol I haven't got nowhere near the amount as some, but its a start an I'd rather not be looking over.my shoulder every five mins as I have done..its more enjoyable I find than poaching, although it does get the adrenaline pumpin lol atb with the permission
