inan 841
I find its not the dogs its the owners who are unfit There again, there are people who look at photos of running dogs at work and haven't a clue as to their condition ,so they make inane comments out of ignorance. Born Hunter 17,751
Bitches tend to get a natural rest with their seasons but I can imagine some dogs may suffer from keen owners. I would imagine most people let there dogs relax a bit over the summer. Keeping them mooching about and what have you should keep them tight and ready to start light work but once the hunting season picks up the dogs peak condition will come with work. Quote Link to post
stabba 10,745
Work em hard in the winter(sept through to march) then rest em up a wee while. Still give em the odd foray out though through the summer to get rid of excess energy and built up agression which certain crosses tend to develop. Then august time start upping the anti again ready for the harvest. To leave a working dog stale through the off season can lead to all sorts of behavioral problems ie agression and restlesness. Imo a dog should be reaching peakness round about now to march which is when he is needed most in the field...jmo..atb stabba 1 Quote Link to post

FUJI 17,209
There's fit dogs and then there's FIT dogs...keep them healthy by all means through the off season, and just about anyone can get a dog fit the art of a good dogman is keeping that dog at the very top of it's game for a certain period of time ie: Sept-Feb,i don't give a flying feck what anyone says you cannot keep a dog in the peak of fitness 12 months of the year....even if you tried to you'd fail with our weather and let's not forget they ain't machines..they will break down if not repaired and sooner than you may think..a couple or three seasons at the best... ...common sense and at times a little PATIENCE is whats required imo...seriously what is the point of even trying to achieve an all year round super fit dog? ...ATB Andy 2 Quote Link to post
dytkos 17,784
First of all, you've got to know when a dog is fit, secondly, you've got to know when enough is enough, either work or conditioning wise IMO Cheers, D. 1 Quote Link to post
cantona 310
I let the dogs relax through the summer, they deserve to after a hard season though they don't just veg out they get exercised just enough to keep them ticking over. Out of season...... Through the season....... Running dogs are like athletes/sportsmen and need to be at as near to peak fitness at the right time imo. how is the dog bred? IT looks tip top mate, obviously gets out a bit Quote Link to post
