killing crew 2,708
as delmondo once told me a dog can only maintain peak fitness for around 4 months. so come march i let mine drop off a bit and start building them back up in september i want them at there peak through nov, dec, jan, feb. but the still get plenty off walks just dont put no game infront of them or trott them from march to september Edited November 5, 2012 by killing crew 6 Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
No athelete trains hard all year round, couple of weeks rest is min requirement physically and mentally, same for working dogs in my opinion. Basic principle of conditioning is progressive overload leads to adaptation, ie to get fit you have to progressively increase your efforts ie work/ training, but you can't just keep overloading or maintaining very high levels of fitness as overtraining or worse still injury will occur. Classic sign of overtraining; lethagy and increased rest pulse rate in dogs (not much use if you don't know what it usually is admittedly). If you think keeping your dogs in peak condition all year round is helping muscle and tendon condition you are kidding yourselves, that said I obviously don't mean they should be left to become obese, just a few weeks lighter/ recovery will be of benefit imo one step back followed by two steps forward cheers matt 2 Quote Link to post
GrCh 856
everyone has different expectations on their own dogs theres no right\wrong way its upto the person who spends their money on looking after them 1 Quote Link to post
gnasher16 30,062
Totally agree about the rest thing.......also its not just a physical thing its just as important mentally for a dog to relax......any dog whos body is peaked constantly will lose drive and intensity......dogs just cant live their lives fully on the edge, neither can people come to that. Fine looking animal there Johnnyboy 1 Quote Link to post

iworkwhippets 12,521
Winter or summer, my dogs are worked, no closed season here for me on bunnies,i up a notch winter months, a good nights kip in a warm kennel, belly full of decent grub, job done Quote Link to post
Guest long-tail
off season being the key words, nothing wrong giving them a bit down time at every opportunity, although come summer mine still out every day but a leisurely walk up the hedgerows or the local park even is not taxing them to the extent of 4 nights a week busting their bollox on the lamp getting knocked up with the usual bangs and bumps they all need time for repair not only that also gives time for my own aches and pains to wither away and enjoy the sunshine, for me they seem to come back each season as ready and up for it as they ever were. on the flip side of that dont think i could commit the time to keep them top of their game all year round, cheers Quote Link to post
Qbgrey 4,089
in the summer when not lamping,i trot mine behind truck just to keep em healthy, but i like to ease off in summer to give them a break. Quote Link to post

Tiny 7 1,694
Like most i let mine drop off in the summer, Keep a decent baseline fittness but they are aloud too go soft in other words put a few extra pounds on and just like the most of us lie about in the sun all day with a mooch in the evening for an hour or so like you say Gnasher good for the body but also good for the mind, Plus sorts any little niggley problems out. Come stubble time too fitten them back up, Slight change of diet, And get them behind a few I even know lads that will even throw the season give them a fornight off throw he season just too really recharge there batterys. I think it show's stock manship someone that can keep them at there peak through out the season with out actaullay peaking. Quote Link to post
moonlighter 1,163
Mine do naff all during the summer. Two half hour walks on the beech and a splash around does them. The rest of the time just laying in the sun. That way they are 100% ready to rock n roll come September. Quote Link to post
