I let the dogs relax through the summer, they deserve to after a hard season though they don't just veg out they get exercised just enough to keep them ticking over. Out of season...... Through th

rest is as good as work these type of dogs need rest to repair

as delmondo once told me a dog can only maintain peak fitness for around 4 months. so come march i let mine drop off a bit and start building them back up in september i want them at there peak throug

mine are kept an adequate level of fitness all year as i mooch most days of the week and having unfit dogs when theres a possibility of something getting up infront of them is an accident waiting to happen, i know ive done it. admittedly there at full fitness in the winter due to the extra nights on the lamp

I let mine get out of shape in summer,,, I'm not saying its right, it's just I do virtually no summer hunting,,also I believe it's easier to get bitches in season by letting them get fat,,,

When I say out of shape,, I don't mean like some lap dog,,

I walk dog on proper hard stuff not soft tar mark, then do sprint work up the fields. Bitch is always looking in good condition and fit. Except when she comes in heat..an then she has it easy , she seems to loose weight during this time an abit picky with grub, she even looks sorry for herself lol

The dog in question i dont think has ever been out of shape and he,s not a summer hunter just likes to keep the dog like that......im of the opinion a dog needs a break not just to relax their body but to get them mentally up for it again as their body starts to peak come season time......maybe its just been a few off weeks but if it continues i think he,ll rest him up a while.....just a shame to be resting a dog during the season whos not otherwise injured.

even top class atheletes take regular breaks, however it pays to keep them in good shape at all times imho

I agree I dont work them every night of the week in season so I think that counts as a sufficient break for my dogs I cant speak for other peoples.

Running dogs are like athletes/sportsmen and need to be at as near to peak fitness at the right time imo.
