ANTHONYCHEZ 27
hi i have a trip booked to the oakneys at the end of the month , im not going with a guide. is it really as bad as what people make out to get shooting. i know they dont have the same shooting laws as the main land regarding the foreshore . has anyone shot up there that would be able to shed light on it. also where did you catch the ferry? i,ve noticed you can catch it from a few diferent ports thanks any help would be appreciated. DIDO.1 22,842
We went with a guide last year but it cost a fortune. While up there everyone we met said 'why dont you just ask the farmers they see em as vermin, dont pay a guide'. So like you I fancy a free lance trip. Geese everywhere. Iv also read posts from locals who complain about people just turning up and asking, apparently they are taking the locals shooting. Also heard some stories of groups all turning up to shoot the same field s at the same time, some having paid. In the farming press iv heard local farmers complaining about goose numbers and saying something more needs to be done. I think you wont have any trouble finding shooting. On the whole the orkneys to me seem like one massive sad waste of a chance. The area isnt massive, there is no foxes or stoats and if everyone worked together then it could become one of the hot new shooting destinations. There are pheasants, grouse and massive numbers of geese and ducks. If farmers, local shooters and local hotels all pulled together and reinvested some of the shooting profits then the islands could become a well managed shooting mecca. Until they do id say screw the locals, get up there and get as much shooting as you can from under the noses of locals and guides

greenshank1 407
Hi I've a couple of mates that go every year and they love it. There are loads of geese and the locals are really friendly. If you go and politely ask I am sure you will get more than you need. My mates did say the locals were getting fed up of Italians and Belgians shooting far far too many and going too close to peoples houses at all hours. Go with the right attitude and hand out a few bottles of malt and you'll likely get invited back next year
