Brooksey 0
Is it possible to buy a quality moderator for my hmr off ticket if so where? I took a tumble a few nights back and have basically trashed my mod and was wondering if I could replace it without getting a reciept for it then going threw a lengthy variation process. I have a moderator on my license, I only want to replace it if I rang the police would they ring a licensed gun trader and ortherise this or do I have to do the three month variation process? I just want to get back out! Quote Link to post

nod 285
Get a sak don't need to put it on ticket as they can be used for airguns Quote Link to post
Brooksey 0
Ah nice one are they any good? I have only used wildcats, thanks for the advice really want to avoid the variation process takes months. Thanks again. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
There are many mods that can be bought off ticket and are suitable for rimfires. Just go into any rfd and ask what Air Rifle mods he has. But DON'T get one with the accoustic wadding in it, a HMR will take it apart in no time! What you do with it afterwards is down to you. Deker 3,478
this post may not sit well your firearms officer not trying to be morality monitor just dont look good looking for off ticket mod :hmm: The law is the law, and it is perfectly legal to buy many moderators without a FAC, it's what you do after that which becomes a personal choice/decision! Just like when you buy a perfectly legal car, nothing wrong with that at all, but if you decide to do 40mph in a 30mph limit it then becomes a personal choice/decision! The need for a variation on Moderators and also Same calibre rifles etc has also been debated over several years, and proposals are in hand to allow RFD to do this directly with no prior police authority required. Don't hold your breath though, must be 3 or 4 years ago this was agreed during one of ACPO's coffee morning! Quote Link to post
dadioles 68
As others have said, there are moderators available that can readily be used on rimfire as well as air rifle although when asked what it is for you must say air rifle. SAK is a classic, cheap and effective example. The only possible complication is if you have a specifically named make of moderator on your ticket. If your ticket states blah blah hmr and "wildcat moderator" you are unlucky and really must replace like with like or get a variation as in the unlikely event that you got caught, a jobsworth could cause you grief as you have not complied with the exact wording of your licence. If, on the other hand, your ticket simply states "moderator" then there really is not an issue. Anyone can sell you one provided you tell them it is for an air rifle. I have several moderators, rather more than I have guns, but I am not committing an offence as my ticket is not specific about the moderator and they are available over the shelf quite legitimately provided the end use is given as air rifle. What you screw it onto is entirely up to you and completely legal. Quote Link to post
Brooksey 0
Always stay on the right side of the law at the end of the day you can't beat them I just wasn't sure of it, like if you have a legal airifle you can sell pretty much to anyone you like but once it's fac'd it can never go back. Thought mods may have been the same clearly not! I have done what I had to and sent it back for variation only I stocked up with blocks of rounds as I no it can take months. Thanks again all.
