Guest astralmackerel
Hi Y'all, The name is Ron (or Auld Fart) and I have decided to re-discover the pleasure of rabbit snaring. I did it (strictly amateur but reasonably successful) when I was a youngster and recently I have had a yearning for some fresh, healthy low fat meat. So I trawled around on the net for a wee while and found this site. I immediately learned a hell of a lot about snaring that I knew nothing of (thanks to Woodga's art of snaring articles) and my interest has definately been piqued. I also fish a little, again, I did so when I was a youngster but I was never what you could call a dedicated angler. Mostly I targeted perch but also got a few small jack pike in the process. I intend to specifically aim for perch as I enjoy eating them and getting a big one seems to be the thing to aim for. One day I'll give you all a good laugh when I share my early fly fishing attempt - note the use of the singular attempt A fair few years back I did quite a bit of shooting (12 bore), lamping etc., but was so disgusted by the Dunblane massacre that I gave up my guns and certificate. One of my friends children attended that school but luckily was off sick on that dreadful day. Anyway, to finish my introduction, I am about to go on holiday (next Friday 29th June 2007) and my intention is to try to sustain myself as much as possible by foraging, trapping or fishing as I travel up the west coast of Scotland starting around Oban - going all the way up the coast, across the top to John O' Groats then back down the east coast ending around Arbroath. This came about thanks mainly to a Swiss gentleman I met last year. I'd been traveling where my fancy took me in an Astra van, which I slept in, and I'd taken one of my motorbikes along on a trailer with the intention of exploring all the wee nooks and crannies of the hills and glens as I travelled, I also had a fishing rod with me which I'd bought for £26 in the local co-op in Fort Augustas about 5 years previous. Anyway, I eventually arrived in Lochcarron and parked up for the night in a layby beside a river a couple of miles up the Pass of the Cattle which takes you over to Applecross (Google it if you've never heard of it - and if you've never been there - GO!!). Next morning I biked over the pass and upon reaching Applecross decided to explore the road to the left which I'd never been down before. Anyway, the road ended abruptly at a dis-used pier and there was this swiss guy fishing off the pier. Being of a naturally friendly bent (nosey bugger) I asked if he'd had any luck and he told me he'd caught four mackerel at 9am that morning and that this was his last day here. That was enough for me - a quick crafty look to see what he was using followed by a quick dash back over the pass, bike onto trailer and me and my trusty steed went over the mountians to Toscaig. A quick visit to the local post office/shop and I had a couple of feather rigs in my grubby little fist. To cut a long story short, you can guess the rest. I'm now a serious mackerel fisherman who regularly traveled the 400 mile round trip to Toscaig most week-ends until the fish left the shores last year and have been back three times already this year. This year I'm a little better organised - the Astra has grown into a semi-high roof transit, the bed is a lot more comfy, I take a generator with me and a houseload of electric mod cons which I'll never need but there's nothing like overkill when your "roughing it", ha ha ha, I also have the added luxury of a porta-poti too , ahhh bliss. What more could a man want ? (apart from food) So anyone who knows good fishing spots with easy access anywhere along the scottish coast, I'd love to hear from you, maybe even beg a few hints and tips on how to get better at catching other species (cod in particular) but anything edible. I only kill to eat but will try anything once. Enough of my ravings. I look forward to (selfishly) gleaning as much from this site and it's members as I am able to absorb and you lovely people are willing to impart - what a crawler !!! Tight lines.
