It is a grey area is TV licensing , google has some interesting arguments for and against.

"The law as it stands allows TV Licence inspectors to take you to court if they discover you watching your TV without a licence - even if you agree to pay on the spot.

Last year a staggering 165,000 people were brought before the bench, and 140-odd thousand were given a criminal record for not having their fee.

It means Licence Fee evasion is the most prosecuted of all 'crimes' in England and Wales, with all the costs in court time that uses up."

yes, but in 100% of those cases people have signed a form and basically given the TVL their details.

It is not a grey area, it is black and white, don't speak to them. As it happens I don't watch TV at all, or in fact, recieve a signal, but it applies to everyone.

That's really interesting.............if you did not have a tv set but if you sneakily tuned into BBC iplayer on your laptop to catch up with Eastenders, what would they do? Would they know...............could they prove it via your IP address etc? If you denied watching BBC but admitted to watching Channel 4 and QVC how would the arguement stand?

As long as you're sure JD ............

I do not pay anything to the BBC. If you do not tell the 'licence' guys your name they cannot do anything about it. For the first month or so they will send letters, of an increasingly threatening nat

Lol this the first time ever I haven't had one mate. I'm sure they will come chapping. My answer will be sorry. I don't watch or contribute to paedophile rings good day to you.

Oh I don't think they could ever prosecute you for that. No way of knowing. It's like I pay 60 a year towards lovefilm on my ps3. It has bbc tv shows on it, how does that work? Lovefilm had obviously paid the bbc for the rights. So it's f**k all to do with them,

What gets me is the yanks get bbc and they don't need to pay for it, why are we Brits so f*****g gullible !

Oh found this.

The BBC iPlayer gives a good summary of the law. Essentially, if you use the computer or other device to watch or record TV as it is being broadcast, then you need a TV licence. If, however, you only watch 'catch up' services, like the catch up programmes on BBC iPlayer, Channel 4 On Demand, Demand Five, etc, then you do not need a TV licence.
