.22 Pistol Reclassification

Recommended Posts

Hi all my name is Patrick, I shoot air rifles and co2 pistols, however I am to young (27) to have been able to shoot .22 pistols or larger calibres, but would like to have tried them. I understand they were all banned after the Dunblane tragedy. It does seem quite unfair that legitimate target shooters have all been punished, due to the actions of one nutcase. After looking around on the web I have found the government banned them to reduce handgun crime, however since the ban handgun crime has been steadily on the rise, and not from sporting target shooters, but from criminals who will always get handguns illegally to commit crime.

I found an e petition on the home office website to reclassify .22 pistols for target shooting, it needs 100,000 signatures to debated in the house of commons. E petition below and the link to it.

Following the flawed blanket ban of all pistols in 1997, we ask that The Home Office should consider reclassifying .22 Pistols as Section 1 firearms.

During the Olympics, it has been highlighted that Team GB were not well-represented in pistol disciplines.

This is because bad, knee-jerk legislation has rendered these disciplines impossible to train for and compete in, within Great Britain.

.22 rimfire pistols are not the criminal's choice of firearm and the perceived danger to the public is purely fictional.

Currently, there is no legacy for shooting sports following the games, despite one Gold medal.

If there is to be a legacy for shooting after the London Olympics, let it be a lifting of the ban on .22 pistols for target use. Therefore allowing a future generation of Team GB shooters to train and thus compete against the World on an even footing.

Please read and sign e petition if you approve many thanks Patrick.

Ah yes I see, but that petition closed on 8thAug this year with 12,999 signatures. It has a new e petition created by Jonathan Booty and closes on 15Aug 2013, it has only 64 signatures at the moment, which seems very dissapointing considering the large amount of ex pistol shooters in the UK.

I've got handguns, it is harder to get them now but they haven't been banned. I don't think you can hold them for target shooting though.

its not too bad in leicestershire as long as you can show good reason then theres normally no problem obtaining one.

Hi Leveller, if you dont mind, what handguns do you have and for what reason? and paulus what would good reason be for a pistol, and what other use would a .22 pistol have apart from target practice.

Thanks Patrick.

most terriermen can have them, anyone who puts livestock down can have them ect all good reasons. they only effectively banned sporting pistols
