iana 25
Went out last night after a few bunnies to my local permission. On arrival kitted up with my 410 and headed off, saw first rabbit, positioned and first shot 1 down. Great I thought. Put rifle over shoulder and went to collect said rabbit, then to my horror something came loose on strap and my rifle lands moderator first onto the grass. Barrel shroud twisted mod bent , couldn't believe it. Got my self together and headed back to car. Managed to straighten up but wasn't sure what damage had been done till I get home. Decided I would carry on as had my rimmy with me do headed off to next permission. Opened my car door and sat nav falls onto concrete and screen smashed!!!! Still determined to carry on headed off up the lane on foot and within a minute fell down a rabbit hole and twisted my ankle!!! Well that was it decided enough is enough and headed off home, waiting for a car to pull out in front of me or something!! So, could it of been any worse???? To my amazement, just confirmed today that it's just the moderator that was bent and the 410 still shoots in a straight line. Quote Link to post

pianoman 3,587
Sorry to read the sat nav was smashed but, thank God the rifle wasn't so damaged beyond a bent and replaceable moderator. Unlike my beloved HW77 and Airmax SR12 scope. I had the rifle in the gunslip over my shoulder as I was unlocking my front door after a session ...then the bloody strap broke, the slip fell backwards off my shoulder and the lot swung off and hit the concrete step of my front door.!! Result was scope bent downwards and useless. Worse though, my HW77's barrel was bent downwards. I was absolutely bereft when I saw it indoors. :cray: However, all was not to be lost. Si Pittaway came to the rescue with the most selfless kindness. He gave me his Airmax scope. The identical spec and model as my written-off one! Just his kind, generous selfless way that! Then, I meet Jim "Logun" Hogan at Red Beck shooting supplies who just happens to have taken up residence there as the business gunsmith. I tell him my tale of woe and he just shrugs. "Bring t'gun in lad and I'll see what's up wi' her! " He sorted and straightened the barrel out. He said it was 10mm out! But he did his stuff and, for £30 and a beer or two she's as good as ever she was! One bit of bad luck and two brilliant men come to the rescue! When life throws us a cow-pat in the mush just think.... There is always some poor bugger worse off then you! Simon Quote Link to post

pianoman 3,587
Fry do you use a hardshell case to carry your rifle? I think that's a wiser move than slings and slips after this experience. I think everybody has a tale of woe with a precious rifle somewhere down the line. Having a break-barrel rifle out for a session, the barrel slips out of the hand and smashing back into the action, bending it upwards and wrecking a beautiful stock through the grip. That must happen a fair bit. But it has taught me ALWAYS CHECK THE GUNSLIP STRAPS. Simon Quote Link to post
fry 209
no mate i have a slip for both rifles, no slings or bipods i generally only carry rifles to the van by the handles an then take them out when i get to the permission. i know the sinking feeling of mishap though last year i slipped on mud and landed face down 410 in hands barrel visibly twisted but thank fully loosened the figure of 8 barrel band and it sprang back true.shit happens glad you got the 77 sorted its like your baby lol. all the best mate. pianoman 3,587
I don't have children Fry mate. I have rifles and yes, this one HW77 is my special baby! I really thought she was stuffed. But Jim Hogan is a real gunsmith of the old school! Amazing to find him working only a few miles away from my home. Hope you are well and free of any more mishaps of your own. Nothing worse than a treasured rifle coming to grief. Simon Quote Link to post
