the two best lurchers at the welsh(IMO)

Recommended Posts

I did say that they were the best 'LOOKING' dogs at the Welsh.I didn't get to speak to the owners,so I don't know anything about there working ability, but,I will say,it was my time at the Welsh, and,I was flabbergasted at the pure amount of real working dogs/people.It really is a show like the old ones that used to be everywhere(local shows)just for the working people/dogs.Even the Midland has become something else lately,so,the show was a breath of fresh air,and I thoroughly enjoyed it. :clapper:

Thats about right Martin, best lookin 'dogs' but for me, NOT the best lookin 'LURCHERS' Just my opinion, but I like a lurcher to look like a lurcher, a crossbred of any type..... for me half the enjoyment of shows is standing outside the ring guessin whats in its make up (then wonderin how it performes?) Maybe it's obvious, maybe not but I prefer a dog that doesnt look like any pure bred, IMO they do.

Do agree with your last point though, the Welsh is a real working dog show, for real working people!

i think to me a shows a waste of a day , i would rather hunt or fish or do d i y on the boat , kennels etc , about the house i like a big organised game fair like scone ,a million miles from my own dogs, i see and hunt and by some fishing gear , i would rather watch anothe type of dog work than see some guy gal walk round a ring with a jukel but hey,we are all diffrent , ive never got bored of hunting but by hell acouple of game fairs a year would be enough for any body all the best to those that like the long summers night for fishing spying future hunting grounds and well roll on the stubbles getting cut, the only good thing about all of these organised things was at one time they supported the hunts one way or another but most filled there pockets , one way or another cheers

i went to a show in chesire once and took my deerhoundx with me who was recovering from a sewn up wound on his groin ( hunting accident) as i was walking round people kept on admiring the dog and saying how i should show him, i wasnt keen on it but after a while my mate twisted my arm and i entered, on walking round the ring my dog just growled all the way round at the other dogs and then when the judge was checking the dog over he must of touched his injury ( which i had warned him of ) well the dog went for him and missed his face by millimeters, ive never seen anyone jump so far, or my face

go so red :icon_redface::icon_redface::icon_redface: well sure enough i came last and vowed never to enter a show again

Some years back, i had a whippet x greyhound, that took everything and had the heart of a loin.

He had several foxes ect and sometimes his face would be well battard.

I have only ever been to 2 shows in my life, one in the north and one in the Uk many moons ago.

The show that i went to in Northern Ireland, florance court, was a small lurcher show.

I enterd my mut, but was a bit cautiouse about his chewed up face :icon_eek:

Their was some very well looking lurchers their, all nice shapes ect :D

I was amazed, when the judge gave me first place :o , he asked me some ?? and kept looking at my dog :hmm: , i, about to walk off, but now know why he was so interested, it was the working quality to him that matterd. :clapper:

All the best :drink:

Well, personally I think the judges got it spot on with the winning dog who was not only very well put together but is a genuine worker from long standing working lines, if I sound a bit biased its 'cos I am.....the dog is owned by myself :clapper::clapper::toast:

There is a nice pic of him in the 'shows' section of this forum. It was taken on the cliffs above cwmtyduu beach in New Quay, West Wales just after he had caught a few bunnies for the freezer (was a bit of a bugger as we were on holiday in a caravan):doh:
