Brimmer 220
A good ferret will work on the rabbit to turn it and bolt rather than kill a good ferret will work the rabbits arse and if it fails to shift it move off then quite often the rabbit will turn and move allow the ferret to bolt it Do you really believe a good ferret will be trying to turn the rabbit to make it bolt, or trying with every trick up its sleeve to kill it, leaving the rabbit no option resulting in a bolt? Same with an arsed up rabbit, they know they have met there match, and can hold off all but the most savage of arse eaters preventing death, then they get a break, and get the feck out sharpish every so often, dont think its a choice allowing a ferret to bolt it, just a basic survival instinct to escape when the heat is off for a short while, forced on them by an animal capable of seeing the job out. Just my thoughts, i do this once every so often, just to see if it still works! I see dogs work and do things that allows a certain amount of thought so I cant see why ferrets after time will learn to do things they for sure understand that what we do is a working partnership between you dogs and ferrets . I have seen n countless times when I have dug to a large tube a ferret and seen ferrets working on rabbits and had ample chance to to kill and work over it and flushing . Terriers do it to foxes so why not ferrets My ferrets will kill but rarely just like I seen many a folk say nowt home at that bury yet have good ferrets enter behind them and knock a couple out of it The humble ferrets is much underrated and has put far more in the bag than any lurcher has in the last decade for hunters . ATB Cookie Hi Cookie, i dont personally think ferrets have the ability to think outside the box and work in partnership with you. I think they get accustomed to handling, even respecting a hand alongside them in a tube pulling a coney, but thats as far as it goes. Everything else (I believe) that goes on is just personally for its own satisfaction. they are programmed to keep going, and we respect them for that, and use that ability to our advantage.I think people link attention from a ferret on a personal level as a melding of minds, but in reality, it's just programmed to pay attention to anything its senses pick up. They do deserve the respect though, they are all litle warriors, and have a lot in common with a terrier TBH. Another animal with a limited capacity beyond its own little world! Quote Link to post

I agree with most of what you say mate, and im not arguing. But i have thought about this a lot, and its fascinating. Ferrets seem to be able to recognise certain people and dogs, and like some more than others. They also get to know what a collar means. They seem to learn about nets, going through them, rather than scrapping them aside. And of course they hunt for pleasure rather than food / survival etc. 1 Quote Link to post
The one 8,489
Got to agree with you guys think a ferret ,terrier works one way and we mend or ways to accommodate Quote Link to post
Mick C. 229
got to give them credit where its due. How does a well brocken and socialised ferret know not to bite a hand smothered in rabbit blood. Yet any other meat is dealt with in the usual manor. They must beable to differenciate between ferreter him being part of the hunting team and that which is prey. My ferrets seem to know when im going ferreting they get very excited when im rummaging abut for my gear. Im pretty sure they are aware that i take them hunting. We keep them close to the house .you can watch there antics through the window when washing up or preparing a meal. Surprised some acedemic hasnt researched these fascinating little creatures. I think there might be some sort of a working respect/bond Quote Link to post
Guest cookiemonsterandmerlin
Love how Chalkie pops in posts something then retracts it Wonder if he ever wrote anything in book before and then wanted to retract that Quote Link to post
