beast 1,884
never got to hunt pigs when i was in Oz but one old boy i met said that when he was younger they used to use bull terrier crossed with cattle dogs. the cattle dogs are tough as old boots, but just added a bit more discretion to the bullies which used to tear into the pigs without thinking and too often got shredded by the pigs. he also used this cross for hunting out and driving wild scrub cattle which he said could be damn nasty as well Quote Link to post
Tusker 28
not many dogs will hold a boar that wants to go fact Thats not fact, thats fiction mate, Ive lived in Oz for years before moving out to UK. I can safely say that many many dogs are single handed boar stoppers, and a heck of a lot of them will go for the biggest pig they see in a sounder. Every boar wants to go ffs, so if your statement were remotely true we would never catch pigs!! Here in the UK I use many different types of dogs for legal boar hunting. Flushing boar to rifles, and tracking shot boar. I have terriers that absolutely love them, and will seek them out from dense sitka all day long. The German Jagd terriers are great boar hunters, these are bred from British terriers taken to Germany in the past, and in my experience since coming to the UK, is that most working type terriers, russels patts, lakeys, borders, bull terrier breeds, gundogs and more, take to hunting boar like ducks to bloody water!! Ive had fewer failures here than I had in Oz. But then the order of the day is no longer 1 out finder/holders, more like finder/bailers with the odd holder if needed to catch a wounded pig to humanely dispatch. Tusker 3 Quote Link to post

Matt3699 142
A handful of these. Any more than 1 of them on a boar would be too many The Spanish would disagree. They normally send in between 4-6 dogs. Not saying it's right, but it's how the Spanish hunt Boar. But these are the same people that run around a sand pit stabbing a bull.... Quote Link to post

I lived there for over 4 years, took my Lurcher with me straight out of Ireland and expected to at least get one or two hares. Wow was I wrong. Killed one Jack rabbit in the entire 4 years I was there! Plenty of Boars about though, the Spanish know how to hunt them alright! They just go in a bit mob handed. Quote Link to post
