starving before working

Recommended Posts

I feed mine the night before and give them an egg or abit of flesh in the morning. They still stick to rabbits and if they kill i allways think that they will kill and move on but if there hungry they will eat a rabbit then sleep. ATB

-----------------thats how we would have done it nowt worse than digging down to a sleeping ferret it wont work any more for along time -billy

What I am saying is most are going to happen anyway, due to arsed up sticking rabbits and stop ends etc. I agree if the poor fecker is staving and not been fed for days of course its going to eat at f

This was common practice many years ago which thankfully now has all but died out .... Ferrets should have access to food and water 24/7 .... Would you like to do a full days work on an empty stomach

All joking aside, people should respect their little workers, treat them right and feed the poor fuckers for f**k sake   Hungry and weak ferrets are not going to give there best

Ever thought of going out ferretting without breakie yourself :nono:

Do you feed your dogs before you work them ?

I don't think you can really compare Dogs and Ferrets in this. Even different breeds of Dog. For example, feeding say a terrier before it went bushing, would be unlikely to cause many problems for the Dog. But feeding a Lurcher or Greyhound before a coursing session could be fatal.

no animal works properly if starved food is fuel,

mine have rabbs/hare/pigeon in there boxs 24/7 none of refuse to work or fade off halfway through the day,

i no a certain well nown pest controller that keeps his ferrets in starve boxs the night before,

they are boxs about 1ft by 1ft sqre completly dark with 3 or 4 breathing holes drilled in one side, wonder how hed feel left in one all night,,

Very odd, and totally unnecessary :nono: .

About comparing ferrets and dogs i agree but in my opinion no dog should be worked on a full stomach.would you like to have your dinner then go and do a full days work ? I wouldnt. I was just asking cookie that just out of interest.ATB.

When i used to go out with a lad who didnt feed his ferrets ( or dogs ) the day before working them. They used to eat a rabbit and fall asleep quite alot mate.

All I can say is they must of been bloody starving, I don't think I have see heard or know anyone who has dug down to a ferret curled up having 40 winks in a warren?

They where mate. He was one of them who never fed them any flesh becuase he thought they would kill more and thought a ferret that bites was better in the warren. You know the sort of planks im on about.

My ferret was a bugger to wake, then I realised It died of starvation

Should of fed it more bread and milk and not put such a heavy bell on its neck, you live and learn

Just micro ferret jills for me now :whistling:

I wasn't having a go at you if that's what you think. My examples were just to point out differences  .

And personally I've always liked a full stomach before going to work otherwise all I think about is food  .

I don't really buy into "if a ferret has food in its belly or not will prevent lie ups", a good ferret wants to kill rabbits whether fed or not there murderous little buggers by nature.

Most lie ups are arsed up rabbits which simply don't want to bolt for a number of reasons. I don't believe lie ups are caused because the ferret decides it wants to chow down on a coney as its hungry. In my fairly limited experience it just wants to kill the rabbit, and often will move on again.
