wabbit slayer 16
I have only used the MK1 with a 15ft collar, What would I change about it? 1- a battery cover rather than having to open the whole box to get to the battery 2- I would like it to be louder, as its hard to hear in windy conditions Would like to keep the price down so putting flashing lights etc on would up the cost! but I do like the idea of being able to pont it in a direction to locate your ferret, like you can with the MK3 Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Just make another mark 1, exactly like the mark 1 and it will go down a storm, look at second hand prices for these items! Nice ideas about hi viz, and i think if i was starting out again, although you would struggle to dig it, i'd be heading down the 15 ft route, obviously you'd need 15 ft collars, but it would be nice to have these in the same size as an 8ft collar. The one 8,529
Aye go along the lines of the mk1 they only got worse after that that mk2 was that good it was only produced for a short while and the mk3 the collars are easy broken and the noise theres no need for disco music Quote Link to post
Tyla 3,179
I'd rather you designed cheaper, better collars to work with the finders. Quote Link to post
Guest scramble
I've been down this route a while ago and I came to the conclusion that the mk1 box or something similar would be perfect. It's a working mans game so price and reliability will play a massive part in which direction you should be heading. If your working on the 457 frequency, with it being such a big band width how accurate do you expect your box to be with the existing collars? Have you thought about collars yet? scramble Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Tough, durable, doesnt break, and works. Works deep. Oh and a resonable price. Quote Link to post
Sirius 1,391
I don't think the mk3 are too bad and the range is very useful when working rough land, much more use than the mk1, just could do with accuracy being improved. I don't think the locator is the problem but the collars. The best collars Deben made were the mk3 grey collars, don't get hooked up on nets, pretty robust the only downside is the fact they are not 100% waterproof. The grey mk1 8ft is ok but poor in comparison too the mk3 especially for lads doing big hedges and deep warrens etc. Quote Link to post
Sirius 1,391
Also the mk1 was terrible for interference from wire especially electric fences. The mk3 is much better but a iPhone does play them up abit. Quote Link to post
The one 8,529
The mk1 went to fifteen foot which was plenty even if it went off the box while you where moving about you got a reading then lost it so you knew your ferret was still there and moving about , but it was the interference if that could be sorted that would be the main thing . I remember taking a box into work and the head of the electronics dept looking at it and saying you would get change back from a fiver building this but it would take ages to find what the components are as the numbers scored off them so theres money in it for sombody doing the research Quote Link to post

Country Joe 1,411
When do you think this new finder would be up and running? I like the clicks of the old box, so i would not change that. And also make them hi viz orange. The main thing for me,would be trying to improve the interference from wire,as most of my ferreting is hedges with netting fencing, and trying to get a mark close to wire fencing, is extremely difficult, Im sure someone from Deben will be looking at this post with interest. Although there are few out there who get a long with the mark3,theres a lot including myself who just dont get along with it. Flashing lights, and weird screeching are not needed. And the less knobs or dials the better. The good thing about it, it does not have the interference from wire. Edited October 30, 2012 by Country Joe Quote Link to post
The one 8,529
I think they imported the components from china thats why there struggling to get spare parts now , that and technologically's moved on 1 Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
I was in China two years ago, managed to find some Fishing Tackle shops, thought i would be able to buy a ferret finder dead cheap, but never saw any. and impossible to tell the shopkeeper what I was looking for. Dont think they have Ferrets, and after visiting local markets, if they did, they would be eaten. Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
A drop proof case like the otterbox for the iPhone , and a drastic reduction in price Quote Link to post
