Tracking dogs, what do you use?

Recommended Posts

hardly a tracking dog by trade, but the few times i been asked to find a fox that has been shot an fooked off iv used me lakie, or a collie, they both done the job, iv since bred em together so hopefully the pups will be able to same :D

alright mate, good luck with the pups.

Interesting mix ,be a bit of a height variance in litter would of thought.

There's a old pet collie x jr terrier round our way, about knee height, black n white has the terrier head, solid looking dog.

to be honest mate, i think 2 are gonna be collies an 3 terrier types, 2 are merle an quite snipey in face, a blue an a red merle, an the other 3 are a black n tan, a red grizzle an a black, an they are all ringers for lakie pups, time wil tell, ill get to watch whole litter grow, so here's hoping :D

Ive kept litters in the past I love it, you can hunt them like a small packand with that bit more time spent training you get to know soon after they enter to game which ones hunt hard and which are just 'following'. Ive found some of the slower ones will come on if given more independence, so they usually leave to start with a friend or other hunter.

I've spent allot of time trying to find the perfect dog for uk stalking and shooting seen and so far the wirehair visla is for me perfect all rounder perhaps this could feature in your plans if you like the pointers have a look at these

Ive just never seen one work, and the wirehaired pointer ticks all of my boxes as far as hunting/tracking as well as being biddable but with great hunting desire, would you say the wire visla has advantages over the pointer.

Teckel, jagdterrier, wachtelhund, all the hpr ( dd/ gwp ,Weimaraner, are probably the hardest I have seen).

a well trained specialist such as the Bavarian mountain hound or Hanoverian schweisshund ( the hanoveran being a bigger heavier dog) will certainly do the job.

The best dog for the job is the best trained tbh.

If your not german I';d eat my hat! I like all the breeds you mention mate, Esp the hanoverian. Not had the joy of seeing many weimeraners, the odd one hunting birds but never on bigger game, where Id imagine them to be better suited.

Would you like some bread with it?

Shropshire born and bred mate, I did spend 20 years in Germany ( soldier, gamekeeper) and had the pleasure of running a teckel to ground and on the cold trail ( up to 100 hours old) and doing seminars with franz borngraeber ( very clued up as fair as all things wounded goes I must say, and an excellent breeder and trainer of Bavarian mountain hounds).

Led mixed pack ( teckel, jagdterrier and Russell's with my mountainhound x gsp)

Had a lot of fun and very much enjoyed the traditional hunting.

I use on a teckel,or my pointer I say that I have never really had to use them, the pointer as done two proper follow ups on deer, shot by other people, who if they had been more confident with a little bit more experience, would have found them anyway, the teckel has done mock blood scents, both are very capable dogs, the teckle is very slow and methodicle on blood, and a swine to get off the carcase, but very very good, the gsp is like shit off a shovel straight there,I think if it was an old scent I would use the teckel,as she wont cut any corners with the wind, you can clearly see her following the scent very closely indeed, there's a book thats worth a read from a man in america Tracking dogs for finding wounded deer By John Jeaneney

Venomviper this is worth a read for you this bloke use's a lot of teckle's and it will suprise you what they will do,This guy has studied the subject in detail

by the way grand looking little dog venomviper amusing little things good luck with it,

Not sure about the availability of Bavarian hounds and hanoveran over here but in Germany they are not easily accessible.

You must have a hunting licence,a certain amount of ground to hunt and follow up over ( these dogs are only to be used for " high" game I.e. not roe deer, fox etc).

Absolute specialists who can be very hard on game when they find ( high prey drive)

A finding will which is unbeatable coupled with nose which is unreal!

( blood scent is not necessary, the pheromone of wounded game shed through the hooves is enough)
